Very bad fall overshadows ski jumping in Engelberg

Norway's ski jumper Ström falls in Engelberg and remains motionless in the outrun. The audience is shocked into silence. The federation can quickly give the all-clear. The result is only a minor matter.

A serious fall by Norwegian ski jumper Anna Odine Ström overshadowed the women's World Cup premiere in Engelberg, Switzerland. Ström fell in the second round during an attempt at 122 meters and then lay motionless in the outrun for several minutes. Several rescuers rushed to help and then transported the 25-year-old away. The spectators and athletes fell silent, and there was no atmosphere at all during the subsequent final of the jumping competition.

Around half an hour after the worrying incident, the Norwegian federation announced via Instagram that Ström was conscious and was now waiting to be checked over by a doctor. Ström had lost his right ski after landing and crashed headfirst into the snow at high speed. Severin Freund spoke on ZDF of a "very bad fall".

Klinec also almost falls

"It's always difficult to watch something like that when someone can no longer go out on their own. I hope she gets better soon," said Germany's best jumper Katharina Schmid. The three-time world champion from Planica initially broke off the ongoing interview in the outrun and appeared to be on the verge of tears. Team colleague Selina Freitag said it wasn't good when an athlete didn't get up herself.

The competition became a completely secondary matter after Ström fell so badly in fourth place on the first run. Ema Klinec from Slovenia narrowly avoided another fall and missed out on victory with her botched landing. Klinec finished third.

First place went to Josephine Pagnier from France ahead of Alexandria Loutitt from Canada. Schmid (formerly Althaus) finished 13th after jumps of 118 and 114 meters. The women are competing in the picturesque Swiss resort for the first time this winter.
