Verstappen seizes Formula One triumph from rivals with frosty determination
Red Bull pilot Max Verstappen clinches victory yet again in Formula 1: A swift start and a smart maneuver in the third lap catapulted Verstappen into the lead at the Spanish Grand Prix. Ferrari, once again, faced disappointment, with Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton finishing behind Verstappen.
Max Verstappen continues to shine, moving closer to his fourth Formula 1 World Championship title. The Dutchman claimed victory at the Barcelona-GP and extended his lead in the standings. Britons Lando Norris in McLaren and Lewis Hamilton in Mercedes finished second and third.
However, Verstappen remained the most dominant force, setting the stage for his seventh season victory in the tenth race right from the start. In the third lap, he outmaneuvered the surprising leader George Russell, with Norris having botched the start earlier. Verstappen refused to let go of the win and strategically outperformed McLaren.
Fourth place was secured by Russell's teammate Hamilton, followed by Charles Leclerc (Monaco) in the Ferrari and his Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz. Nico Hülkenberg (Emmerich/Haas) initially seemed to be on track for points but ultimately finished without them.
Who can challenge Formula 1 titan Verstappen?
In the standings, Verstappen now has 219 points and maintains a comfortable lead. Norris (150) and Leclerc (148) are his closest competitors. However, for Norris who started with high aspirations from the pole position, this race was disappointing overall. He lost the lead in the first turn to Russell and had to let Verstappen pass.
Norris's attempt to regain the lead through a later pit stop also faltered. He found himself behind the Mercedes duo at times, but with fresh tires, he fought his way back to second place. However, he lost significant time and the deficit to Verstappen was only about eight seconds. The British driver, who had won in Miami, came closer in the quick McLaren, but not close enough to attack Verstappen. Verstappen then came in again before Norris for fresh tires. Norris followed a little later - when he got back on the track, his deficit was again seven seconds.
"Push hard and don't wear out your tires," Verstappen's race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase radioed to the Champion, and Verstappen worked hard to keep the determined Norris at bay. Although the Briton was a little faster, Verstappen's lead remained significant at seven seconds before the finish. Verstappen drove error-free towards the win, Norris couldn't catch up in the deciding phase.
