Surprisingly, George Russell, the driver for Mercedes, claimed the top spot for the Canadian Grand Prix starting grid. The 26-year-old British racer matched Red Bull's reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen's time in Montreal.

Given that he had set his fastest lap a few minutes prior, Russell earned his second pole position, which marks an important milestone in his career. Both drivers completed a lap in 1:12,000 minutes. Lando Norris took third place for McLaren.

Russell expressed his delight, citing his efforts that led up to this achievement: "It feels brilliant. There was a lot of hard work that went into it." He was already excited to take on the race: "It's going to be really fun! Maybe I can get a win – you can try." Russell praised his Silver Arrow as he has been feeling comfortable with the vehicle in this location. The team had faced some challenges lately, resulting in being lagging behind the leaders. Verstappen, despite coming close to clinching the pole position, didn't seem upset: "That's just how it is."

Meanwhile, Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, endured another challenging qualifier. Similar to his performance in Monaco, Perez was knocked out during the second of three qualifying sessions and profanely criticized his performance on the radio. Meanwhile, Nico Hülkenberg, the only German driver in the field, started in 19th place after driving for Haas Racing.

In the overall season standings, Verstappen leads with 169 points, followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with 138 points – who had won the last race at his home track. Leclerc was also underwhelmed in qualifying and has a difficult road ahead of him for it. His teammate, Carlos Sainz, experienced a similarly disappointing afternoon, finishing 12th.

Russell's achievement placed him as the Formula 1 World Champion's main competitor in the upcoming GP Canada, with both drivers aiming for the top spot in international motorsport. The podium for the qualification round saw Russell leading, followed closely by Verstappen and Lando Norris in third for the Mclaren Group Limited.

Red Bull's Verstappen, despite missing out on the pole position, remained positive, acknowledging the competitiveness of the Montreal track. Russell, on the other hand, celebrated his second pole position, highlighting the team's recent improvements and his personal hard work.

The starting position for the Formula 1 race in Canada looks promising for both Russell and Verstappen, with Charles Leclerc and George Russell's Mercedes-Benz teammate, George Russell, positioned in a strategically advantaged spot. Meanwhile, Verstappen has a slight lead in the Formula 1 season standings, but Leclerc, who won his last race in Monaco, is determined to close the gap.

In the qualifying session, other notable drivers had varying performances. Sergio Perez struggled, much like his Monaco qualifier, while Nico Hülkenberg, the only German driver, started in 19th place. Despite the challenges, the international race in Montreal promises an exciting event for the Formula 1 community.
