Valentin aims to harness Odin's strength to emerge as the Supreme Combatant.
After each triumph in the octagon, Swiss combatant Robert Valentin lets out a thunderous roar for Odin, his Nordic god muse. Known for his captivating character and impressive fighting skills, he's catapulted into the limelight of "The Ultimate Fighter" (TUF), the renowned MMA reality TV show. At 29, Valentin is now just one battle away from joining the elite club of combat sports - snagging a UFC contract. His Nordic mythology roots provide him with an immeasurable energy source.
Since its inception in 2005, TUF has seen trailblazers like Conor McGregor don coaching hats. The participants, coached by UFC stars, share living quarters in a Las Vegas estate, often resulting in internal strife. Thanks to his outgoing demeanor and captivating style, Valentin managed to stay above the fray during his season. He continues to leave a mark with mesmerizing elbow KOs and unconventional submissions.
His foray into TUF is the result of his manager's work behind the scenes. "I didn't even know I was signed up," Valentin revealed to ntv.de. "The UFC desires quirky personalities for the show, charismatic and spirited, with a knack for entertaining combat. Performance standards must still be met - but Valentin fits the bill perfectly."
He's always been a TUF admirer, even if he skipped over the narratives in favor of the action. Once inside the house, however, he felt right at home. "This set-up was made for me," he smiled. "I walked through the house every day with a grin, while many others struggled with the cameras' presence."
He presented as spiritually sound in the house, his affection for Nordic mythology as a lifelong theme. As a kid, he devoured sagas and comics, and dressed up as a Viking. As an adult, he was drawn to the close bond between Nordic paganism and nature. "I've always been energized and strengthened by nature," he said. "Plus, the warrior mindset harmonizes perfectly with my fighting style — relentless and aggressive like a berserker."
A Trip to Valhalla or Victory
The mythology became a part of his identity, Valentin said. "Victory or Valhalla" is his battle-cry — a much-needed Viking Reward for the fallen warriors. His chest boasts Nordic runes, a symbol he had previously associated with right-wing ideology, but quickly distanced himself from. "I'm conservative politically, that's true," he explained. "But my political stance differs in Switzerland from Germany, and my rune tattoo carries a distinct meaning for me."
The sport itself remains the primary focus. On August 24th, Valentin (record: 10-3) will battle Ryan Loder, another TUF contender who's similarly risen through the ranks. The winner will secure a UFC contract and compete in the world's biggest MMA organization. But no victory is ever guaranteed, emphasizes the Swiss contender. "My goal is to put on an entertaining show, showcasing my best abilities. Ryan is an exceptional athlete, a disciplined wrestler. I've defeated many opponents with submissions already, however, and bringing me down to the mat has never been smart."
His arsenal includes an unorthodox mix of striking techniques. "With my creative striking," he said, "I'll keep Ryan guessing." He'll apply pressure, making Loder feel befuddled and overwhelmed. When faced with treacherous waters, Valentin is at his best. The gods' blessings have been secured for his upcoming battle.
In the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), TUF has been a platform for notable figures like Conor McGregor. Valentin, with his captivating personality and impressive fighting skills, showcased his talents in a season of TUF, delivering mesmerizing elbow KOs and unconventional submissions.
