Unveils his hidden formula for contentment: Günter Netzer

At the ripe age of 80, a football legend born in Germany is celebrating his special day. Known for his professional skills, managerial roles, entrepreneurial ventures, and TV expertise, Günter Netzer, shares some insights about his personal life in a chat with "Kicker" magazine.

Touching eight decades, Netzer finds planning at this age rather absurd. "Hey, how can I plan anything at 80? It'd be fricking ridiculous," he laughs. His philosophy in life has always been to create fulfillment, making him one content soul. He has emphasized the importance of family, and his life is nothing short of perfect.

The former World and European champion, the Master of Midfield for Borussia Mönchengladbach and Real Madrid, who emerged from the grass roots, does not believe in grand parties. "I've got 25 people – friends who have impacted my life – joining us. I've never forgotten their kindness and I've returned the favor," Netzer shares.

The knee's history, but other parts are healthy

The retired professional, manager, entrepreneur, and TV expert found his happiness decades ago in his personal life. Public appearances by Netzer are few and far between. "I've got a dream family, a wife who's stayed by my side for 46 years and supports me, who's an absolute dream," he says fondly. "Then came the best thing in my life when I was 42, this little daughter, the greatest joy of my life. They mean more to me than all the trophies, accolades, and the fame."

Günter Netzer reflects on his life with a sense of humility and gratitude. "I can't believe what life has thrown at me. I've managed to wrap up various careers, but I'm still baffled by how blind fate led me here. Sometimes, I've thought, 'Good lord, I feel like I'm being guided.'"

Netzer's tough exterior doesn't deter him from acknowledging the toll of age. "The knee's not what it used to be," and his back leaves him with fresh challenges every day," he admits. Nevertheless, "On my 80th birthday, I don't expect sympathies, but a celebration – first, for making it this far, and second, for managing to stay in this shape, which I'm grateful for."

Despite the wear and tear on his body, especially his knee, Netzer remains passionate about soccer. "[Even at 80], I still enjoy watching soccer matches," he shares, revealing his enduring love for the sport.

Despite his illustrious career in soccer, Netzer's greatest joy comes from his family. "Soccer is wonderful, but my family is my true treasure," he declares, emphasizing the importance of his loved ones over his professional achievements.
