Formula 1 driver market - Unresolved question about the future causes Sainz stress
Carlos Sainz is causing an unsettled period for his employer in the next Formula-1 season as he has to make way for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton (39) of Mercedes at Ferrari by the end of the year. Sainz is being considered both as a possible driver for the Silver Arrows and as a future driver at Alpine, Williams, and Sauber, the designated Alfa Romeo Racing team.
"It's causing a bit of stress and thinking time," Sainz noted on the sidelines of the British Grand Prix. "Especially because a lot happens behind closed doors from Monday to Thursday." Many talks are being held, he explained, without going into details about who and what exactly. "It's more stress than in other years."
Mick Schumacher's decision is also dependent on Sainz's choice.
Once he is on the track on Thursdays, however, he is fully concentrated on his work with Ferrari. Sainz is currently fourth in the championship standings before the race in Silverstone. He won the Grand Prix in Australia this year after recovering from a blind spot issue during his comeback.
Sainz's decision also affects other personnel, including Mick Schumacher. He is one of several drivers on Alpine's list. However, it remains unclear for whom Sainz will drive next year. "He is a world-class driver," Williams team principal James Vowles stated in Silverstone. "But we don't have to make a decision today. What's important is a long-term partnership. Vowles expects some clarity, however, before it goes into September.
