Union Berlin is making a morbidly humorous comment regarding the Dresden Bridge.
The Union Berlin's defensive line showed remarkable strength during their match against Leipzig. The club's social media team celebrated this achievement by making a dark humor remark about Dresden's bridges. The demolition work on Carol Bridge is due to be completed soon.
Union Berlin's social media team sparked controversy with an off-the-cuff comment about Dresden's bridges on their platform during the first half of the match against RB Leipzig. "Half-time. Defensively more stable than any Saxon bridge. Keep it up, lads!", a team member posted on X platform.
It wasn't until almost two hours later that the Berliners realized they had crossed a line with their comment, given the collapse of Dresden's Carol Bridge on Wednesday. Union swiftly issued an apology to the people of Dresden and the city, admitting that they had gotten carried away in the heat of the moment.
"Got a bit carried away in the heat of the moment"
Union Berlin's defense shone brightly as Leipzig failed to score even from a penalty kick: Despite having the upper hand throughout the game, Leipzig managed only a 0:0 draw against Union Berlin, keeping their record of three consecutive wins intact. A crowd of 47,800 spectators watched as Lois Openda missed a penalty in the 74th minute - the only notable event in what turned out to be an otherwise uneventful Bundesliga match. Before the social media controversy, the main focus had been on the absent players. Leipzig was without their coach Marco Rose, who was serving a suspension following the Leverkusen game. Although Rose was present on the pitch during the warm-up, he handed over control to assistant Alexander Zickler 30 minutes before kick-off.
On Wednesday morning, a section of Carol Bridge, spanning the Elbe, collapsed in Dresden. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The demolition work on the New Town side was due to be completed by evening, as per fire department spokesman Michael Klahre. This was just in time for the anticipated 4-meter water level on the Elbe in Dresden on Sunday morning, triggering alarm stage 1, explained René Herold, head of Dresden's environmental office. The normal water level is about 2 meters.
Union Berlin's apology for their football league comment extended to acknowledging the ongoing situation in Dresden, stating, "We deeply regret our insensitive remark about Dresden's bridges and offer our sincere condolences for the recent bridge incident."
During the post-match analysis, the football pundits discussed Union Berlin's performance and the aftermath of their social media post, noting, "Despite their commendable defensive display, the events off the pitch have overshadowed Union Berlin's victory in the football league."
