Unhappy Tuchel is uncertain about his next move.
Thomas Tuchel assumed the role as FC Bayern's coach last spring, but before long, it will be time for him to move on, with just one title to show for his efforts. There are still two matches left, with only the runners-up spot at stake. Tuchel is reflecting on his time with the club.
Bayern Munich's head coach, Thomas Tuchel, expressed dissatisfaction with his time at the German soccer powerhouse, stating, "I signed on to win championships. We didn't achieve that, that's what you're judged by." The 50-year-old is about to manage his final home game with Bayern against VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday (17:30/DAZN and live ticker at ntv.de).
In the Champions League, FC Bayern displayed impressive performances despite losing in the semi-finals against Real Madrid - not consistently in the Bundesliga, however. Tuchel accepts his share of the responsibility for this. He summarized, "There are still many shades of gray when evaluating my time in charge," while rejecting public analysis.
The Future is Undecided
Tuchel has not yet finalized his next move. "I'll make these decisions in the upcoming weeks in a peaceful environment," stated the 50-year-old. After this week's clash against TSG Hoffenheim, he intends to focus on his personal future plans. Will he return to Germany or England, where he won the Champions League with Chelsea FC in 2021?
Reports suggest Manchester United is interested. "I haven't got a clue. I'll think about it peacefully. It was supposed to turn out differently here, but it's been clear since February," Tuchel revealed, with the assurance, "There have been no discussions with other clubs yet because my focus was entirely on the task at hand. There are no tendencies and no decisions." He also intends to involve his coaching team in the decision-making process.
No Anxiety for Gifts or Farewell Gatherings
Tuchel replaced Julian Nagelsmann in March 2023 and committed to a contract until 2025. However, Bayern announced his early departure in February. The club has been frantically searching for a replacement. Tuchel will bid farewell to his supporters in his last home game. He's unsure how emotional the moment will be, "I don't know just yet. I'll see how it impacts me." He does not anticipate receiving any gifts from the club. "You don't need to offer flowers for an early contract termination without a triumph," he said with a grin.
For the match against Wolfsburg, when Bayern hopes to regain second place by beating Stuttgart, Tuchel intends to keep the players' focus energized without going overboard. He wants to "avoid overwhelming the boys, but I can't convey indifference." Famous quote from Franz Beckenbauer, "Simply go out and play soccer," doesn't match Tuchel's approach.
"Maintain Your Positivity"
Tuchel urged not to lose the cheerfulness and sense of humor, no matter the recent setbacks. "The key is to maintain a respectful attitude as losers." He admitted to being "confined in a tunnel" until Saturday. The events "happened under the radar, not knowing what kind of emotion I'm dealing with or what day it is."
In terms of player availability, Bayern will be without top scorer Harry Kane, Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry. "The four attacking players from the Real game won't be participating in tomorrow's game," said Tuchel. Therefore, some players eager for playing time will have their chances. Kane suffers from a troublesome back issue. He also projects that Sané (pubic bone injury) and Musiala (knee pain) will miss the concluding match of the season against Hoffenheim. Gnabry (torn muscle in thigh) is already sidelined for the year.
