"Unforgivable": Holstein supporter kicks goalkeeper

Holstein Kiel made history by being promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time, but one fan's celebration came to a premature end as he was ejected for attacking the opposing team's goalkeeper.

Fortuna Düsseldorf won't be taking any action against a Holstein Kiel fan who attacked their goalkeeper, Florian Kastenmeier, after their 1:1 draw on Saturday. The second-division soccer club released a statement condemning the fan's actions following the game. "We can't condone such fan violence even with the state of emergency in Kiel's stadium," the spokesperson said.

Holstein Kiel had secured their promotion with a point, causing thousands of fans to rush onto the field to celebrate. A fan took advantage of the chaos to attack Kastenmeier as he tried to thank the Fortuna fans for traveling with him.

"No further steps"

Kastenmeier defended himself by pushing the fan away; the fan fell down then got back up and kicked the goalkeeper in the back of the knee with force. Kastenmeier remained calm and did not retaliate. Stewards soon appeared and removed the Kiel supporter from the field.

Videos of the incident circulated online. "Despite the stewards being on-site immediately, we will not take any additional measures in this case in cooperation with our player," the Fortuna spokesperson added. Holstein Kiel has not publicly commented on the incident yet. Additionally, the promotional celebrations nearby the stadium were peaceful and incident-free, according to the police.

Holstein Kiel's promotion to the Bundesliga marked a historic milestone as the first team from Schleswig-Holstein to achieve this feat. Fortuna Düsseldorf also has a chance to be promoted through the relegation play-off against the third-to-last team in the Bundesliga.
