Unanticipated features in the latest BMW R 12 model

BMW Motorrad introduces the new R 12, a casual cruiser designed for daily use. Although not as popular as its sibling, the R 12 nineT, this model has remarkable capabilities, as seen in testing.

Priced around €14,500, the basic model of the R 12 series is a more reserved choice compared to the R 12 nineT. Featuring a classic cruiser design, this model sets itself apart from the higher-end and over €3,000 more expensive R 12 nineT.

BMW's history with cruisers has been less than favorable, especially with the R 1200 C (built from 1997 to 2004), which never made a significant impact on the market due to its powerful Telelever suspension and weak 60 PS boxer engine.

This new R 12 is different, despite its boxer engine, which is the 1170 cubic centimeter, four-cylinder unit delivering 70 kW/95 PS at 6,500 rpm. With 14 horsepower less than its sister model's engine, the missing power is hardly noticeable: The peak torque is almost on par with the nineT, resulting in a more than respectable performance. Since torque is crucial for a classic cruiser, this is a desirable trait.

The test saw a fuel efficiency of 5 liters per 100 kilometers, with a reminder of refueling after 190 cruised kilometers.

The engine is tuned well and enjoyable to ride. The engine performance is plentiful over idle speed, and the two riding modes are well-named: "Roll" delivers gentle throttle response, while "Rock" allows cruiser-typical maneuvers. In the first mode, the rider can cruise effortlessly; in "Rock," aggressive cornering is possible.

The boxer engine delivers 70 kW/95 hp.

The front radial four-piston monoblock calipers provide excellent braking performance. The rear disc is also well-sized. The clutch is smooth and easy to handle, working in harmony with the precise six-speed gearbox. The ABS for curve stability and dynamic traction control come as standard.

The chassis is good, although the suspension travel has been reduced by three centimeters, from 12 to 9 centimeters, to achieve a lower seat height. Though noticeable when the asphalt under the thick tires becomes less typical for cruisers, the shorter suspension travel is acceptable.

The suspension tuning is excellent. It is not at all soft yet allows for aggressive cornering without instability. Though the footrest may touch the ground due to the reduced ground clearance, this is a minor detail compared to the overall ride experience.

At 227 kilograms, the weight of the R 12 is manageable, making it corner-friendly with the large tire sizes of 100/90-19 and 150/80-16.

Standard equipment includes ABS, dynamic traction control, and a 6.5-inch TFT display. Optional equipment encompasses a keyless ignition system, heated grips, and a USB charging port.

The displays are very clear and reduced.

The R 12 is delivered in a round instrument with a half-round scale and a digital display field. It complements the bike's pure appearance. Initially skeptical about the micro-TFT display as an optional extra, it has since grown on us as the displays are very clear and minimalistic.

The motorcycle features a round, LED headlight (optionally with cornering lights) and doesn't initially come with a windshield. The latter must be purchased separately, as well as a passenger seat with footrests, as the standard R 12 is designed for solo riders.

We find the "Keyless Ride" keyless operation system to be overly simplistic. Although the key is necessary for the steering lock and the fuel cap, the ignition process is controlled via button press. This design feels crude.

Otherwise, there are no significant issues: The double exhaust pipes of the exhaust system are harmonious and emit a sonorous sound, without being loud. The mirrors provide a clear image, the seating position is comfortable, but not overly relaxed.

BMW offers many customization options, ranging from 719 cast wheels to handlebars, seats, hand levers, turn signal mirrors, special cylinder heads, or a smartphone holder to a silver-trimmed rear end. With a modicum of exploration, the base price of €14,460 can be increased to over €23,000.

The BMW R 12 is powered by an air/oil-cooled 1170 cc boxer engine.

Conclusion

The BMW R 12 is an enjoyable, satisfying ride, especially in areas with hilly roads and developed infrastructure. The minor drawbacks, such as the required key for the steering lock and fuel cap, are outweighed by the bike's engaging performance and customization options, making it an appealing choice for many.

To everyone's amazement, BMW comes out with an exquisite model that features a type of motorcycle that Harley-Davidson no longer produces: the quintessential, vintage-styled cruiser reminiscent of the dearly missed Sportster 1200. Who would have imagined that?
