German top-tier football league - Uli Hoeness: Dependence of Kompany's commitment hinges on specifics
Vincent Kompany is about to become Bayern Munich's new head coach, according to former board member, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Rummenigge confirmed the news during an interview with Sky and mentioned that former Bayern coach, Pep Guardiola, had given his blessing to Kompany's appointment.
"The board has chosen Vincent Kompany to be our new head coach. We're just working out the final details, and once that's done, the announcement will be official," said retired soccer player and manager, Rummenigge, who is 68 years old. "Pep Guardiola has been very supportive of Vincent. He thinks highly of him, and his opinion matters a lot."
According to reports, Kompany's appointment will be officially announced on Wednesday. The current coach of FC Burnley is said to have signed a contract with Bayern until 2027. Rummenigge also confirmed that Bayern and Kompany's current club, Burnley, have agreed on a release fee which will be between ten and twelve million euros.
In his current position with Burnley, Kompany managed to get the club back into the Premier League last year, winning the Championship with ease. However, this season, the team unfortunately dropped out of the top flight league.
For Bayern Munich, Kompany's appointment would put an end to the drama of weeks of searching for a new coach. After it was announced that Thomas Tuchel would be leaving at the end of the season, other potential candidates, including Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen, national coach Julian Nagelsmann, Austrian national coach Ralf Rangnick, and former Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner, all declined the offer. Efforts to keep Tuchel also did not work out, and failed attempts to rehire Tuchel again eventually led to Kompany's appointment.
