Uli Hoeneß can once more entertain aspirations

Uli Hoeneß has an aspiration. He envisions Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz playing together in Munich, not just in the German national team kit, but in the Bayern jersey. For a period of 90 minutes on Monday evening, a piece of Hoeneß' dream became reality.

This is something Hoeneß would have enjoyed seeing as well. Wirtz is joining Munich, and it's not as an opponent like a few weeks back with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, but as a teammate of Musiala. However, things didn't pan out as planned, as Germany, on Monday at 8:45 PM/CET on ZDF and live ticker on ntv.de, secured their position in the Nations League quarter-finals with a win against Holland. Musiala was unable to play due to hip pain.

The potential "Wusiala" show at the Allianz Arena was scrapped. Wirtz, a beloved player and Bayern's top wish list player for honorary president Hoeneß, would play alone - in the German national team kit. Just like he did in the 2:1 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Zenica, where the 21-year-old put Germany on the path to victory with the first goal in Musiala's absence.

The assist was a flawless pass from Robert Andrich to Wirtz. A Leverkusen collaboration that showcased the familiar, intuitive understanding between players who train together daily. "Rob played the ball perfectly," Wirtz explained, not scoring himself but setting up striker Deniz Undav, whom he had spotted in his peripheral vision.

"Wusiala" at Bayern - an extravagant vision

What if two such prodigies as Musiala and Wirtz started playing together regularly, not just sporadically in the German national team kit? Hoeneß dreams of it. "Everyone knows that I would like to see Flo Wirtz at Bayern Munich," the 72-year-old stated recently.

Daydreaming is allowed, even if a "Wusiala" union is a Munich future plan whose implementation seems as costly as it is challenging. Currently, Bayern's management is mainly focused on securing Musiala's services beyond the summer of 2026. The 21-year-old is set to be the face of Bayern's future, and a contract extension would cost a fortune.

Exactly four months after the home European Championship's opening match, Wirtz will play again at the Bayern Arena on Monday. He scored the opening goal with a 1:0 strike against Scotland on June 14. Musiala followed suit shortly after. Afterwards, everyone talked about the dream team "Wusiala". However, this time there's a solo Wirtz performance, with the injured Musiala only watching his home game. "Playing against the Netherlands is always very special - and a bit harder," Wirtz said after the Bosnia win: "We're looking forward to it."

The 72-year-old honorary president Hoppeß, fondly known for his aspiration of seeing Musiala and Wirtz together, will be delighted to know that Wirtz is now joining Bayern Munich. Despite Musiala's absence due to hip pain, Wirtz will be donning the Bayern jersey, not as an opponent, but as a teammate.

Emulating their familiar, intuitive understanding from their training days at Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz scored a goal for Germany against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Musiala's absence, reigniting talks of the potential 'Wusiala' duo at Bayern Munich.
