"Ugly bird" counters Gladbach's lightning double pack
Werder Bremen get into the game better at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the opening matchday 15 of the Bundesliga. But the Foals responded with a double strike shortly before and after the break. But then Gladbach slip up and the "ugly bird" Marvin Ducksch scores the final goal.
Borussia Mönchengladbach's impressive home streak was broken despite Rocco Reitz's first brace in the Bundesliga. The five-time German champions had to settle for a 2:2 (1:1) draw against Werder Bremen at Borussia-Park after five consecutive wins at home.
After going behind through Rafael Borre (7'), home-grown Reitz (45', 49') initially turned the game around. However, Marvin Ducksch (76) at least salvaged a point for the visitors. However, Bremen missed out on their first away win of the season at the seventh attempt and their first success in Gladbach since October 2010. Both teams remain in mid-table after the points were shared.
The boycott in protest against the controversial investor deal of the German Football League (DFL) lasted twelve minutes - by the end of which the visitors were already in the lead. Borre converted a cross from Romano Schmid with technical skill. Franck Honorat and Joe Scally had lost sight of the striker.
The hosts were impressed by the early deficit in front of 50,660 spectators. Goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas fished the ball off the foot of international Ducksch in the greatest of emergencies (12').
Coach Ole Werner's team repeatedly had longer spells of possession, with the Foals often trailing behind. Gladbach's attacking play was extremely slow to get going. Alassane Plea created a bit of danger with two shots (27', 39'). At the other end, Leonardo Bittencourt missed from a promising position after a Borre cross (42').
The equalizer came out of nowhere before the break. Robin Hack, who had come on for the sick Tomas Cvancara, cleverly defended the ball in Bremen's penalty area and laid it off for Reitz - the 21-year-old finished superbly.
Inspired by this, Gladbach came out of the locker room with a lot of energy. Manu Kone only hit the post, and Plea failed to beat Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer with the follow-up shot (47').
But the hosts kept the pressure on. Reitz cleverly let Olivier Deman run into space and remained ice-cold in front of Zetterer. Bremen were now challenged, Gladbach were waiting for counterattacks. Plea narrowly missed a third goal (59'). A good quarter of an hour later, Ducksch equalized.

In response to Gladbach's second goal, Werder Bremen's Marvin Ducksch, known for his mismatched appearance, managed to score an uglier bird's final strike, interruption of play not affecting the outcome. During the break, Gladbach showed improvement and nearly scored a third goal, but it was Ducksch who capitalized on a chance to equalize. Despite Bremen missing out on their first away win, they at least managed to prevent a clean sweep by Gladbach.
