"Harry Potter" series - Two "Succession" makers take over
In Hogwarts Magic School, intrigue seems to be a regular agenda item. According to the US industry website "Deadline," a duo has been hired for the highly anticipated HBO series about the magically gifted orphan Harry Potter: Reportedly, screenwriter Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, who have previously been pillars of success for the series "Succession," will be responsible for the "Harry Potter" series.
Gardiner allegedly outmaneuvered her competition - Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan ("The Devil's Hour," "Teenage Bounty Hunters") - in the race for the position of showrunner. She will also serve as executive producer of the yet-untitled "Harry Potter" series. Besides "Succession," where she joined in Season 3, Gardiner has already earned her series credentials with "Killing Eve" and "Crossing Lines."
Experienced Director Takes Charge
Director Mylod, who has directed over a dozen episodes of the critically acclaimed drama series starring Brian Cox (78), will reportedly bring some of the new adventures of Harry Potter and his friends to the screen. Mylod also sat in the director's chair for "Game of Thrones" and "The Last of Us." According to "Deadline," he will also serve as executive producer.
The series "Succession," which revolves around the power struggle within a wealthy family over their media empire, is also produced by HBO. The series has received a total of 13 Emmys, including in 2020 and 2022 as "Best Dramatic Series."
Warner Bros. has been working on the "Harry Potter" series reboot for HBO Max's streaming service for several months. According to "Variety," the first part of the series is expected to debut on HBO Max in 2026. David Zaslav (64), CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, reportedly revealed this information at the quarterly investor conference in February. Further details about the project are still unknown.
The duo of Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, known for their successful run on 'Succession', have been chosen for the 'Harry Potter' series on HBO. Gardiner, having outperformed competitors Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan, will serve as both showrunner and executive producer for the upcoming drama series. Mark Mylod, who has directed episodes of 'Game of Thrones' and 'The Last of Us', will also contribute as director and executive producer for the 'Harry Potter' series. This 'Harry Potter' series revival, which will be available on HBO Max, follows in the footsteps of successful drama series like 'Succession' and 'Game of Thrones'.
