Two shiris in a rehab cell instead of the Champions League
The Champions League qualification phase is already underway. In one match, two referee assistants had to be replaced at short notice. The two Poles ended up in the drunk tank of the police.
Before their planned deployment in a Champions League qualification match, two Polish referees were allegedly under the influence of alcohol when they stole a traffic sign. Along with another man, they ended up in the drunk tank, as reported by TVP Sport, citing the police in Lublin. Both were scheduled to serve as referee assistants in the match between Dynamo Kyiv and Glasgow Rangers in Lublin on Tuesday evening.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) confirmed that the video assistants for the match were replaced. No further details were provided. The Polish Football Association (PZPN) stated that the situation is being analyzed.
TVP Sport reported that the association has already decided that the two referees can no longer practice their profession. The PZPN takes the matter very seriously, does not accept this behavior, and has terminated their contracts.
According to local police, there were reports from passersby early Tuesday morning that three men were carrying away a traffic sign in the center of Lublin. "Police officers went to the scene. The men were tested with a breathalyzer. It turned out that they were heavily drunk," a police spokesperson told the station. They are being investigated for damaging traffic infrastructure.
The PZPN stated that it will conduct a detailed analysis of the situation in connection with reports of inappropriate behavior by two Ekstraklasa referees who were supposed to be deployed in the Champions League qualification match between Dynamo Kyiv and Glasgow Rangers. If the allegations are confirmed, it will apply for the termination of the contracts with the two.
