Champions League - Tuchel's hesitation with Old Trafford fan Musiala: "Small limit"
Not only for Harry Kane, but also for Jamal Musiala, games in England are something special.
Like England captain Kane, the German international, who played most of his soccer at Chelsea FC until moving to Bayern Munich at the age of 16, is eager to play in the Champions League match against Manchester United on Tuesday (21:00/Prime Video).
"When I was younger, I always looked forward to watching games at Old Trafford," said Musiala on Monday evening before training at the famous stadium. The 20-year-old hopes that he will be allowed to start after his thigh injury and a brief appearance in the 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, which was "a bit of a shock" for him.
"I feel good. I've trained very hard to get fit again," said Musiala in Manchester: "But there will definitely be a small limit on my minutes." This hunch was confirmed a little later by coach Thomas Tuchel: "It's not enough for him for 90 minutes."
Tuchel doesn't want to risk anything
In contrast to goalscorer Kane, who will of course start and is very much looking forward to the game in his home country, Tuchel left it open for Musiala whether the playmaker will also be in the Munich starting line-up or come off the bench again. "He can start, then we know that he can play a maximum of 60 minutes," explained Tuchel.
Tuchel does not want to take any risks with Musiala, who has recently become more susceptible to injury, in view of the important end to the Bundesliga season with the games against VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg. "It can also help Jamal to play 30 minutes and then start on Sunday," said the Bayern coach, explaining his thoughts.
After all, Bayern have no pressure from the table at Old Trafford after already qualifying for the round of 16 as group winners. But both the coach and his players are feeling the pressure of having to put in a convincing performance after the collective failure in Frankfurt. "There is an opportunity to show a reaction on one of the biggest stages in the world," said Tuchel.
"For me personally, a game in Manchester is always a big game," announced the former Chelsea FC coach. That also applies to goalscorer Kane and playmaker Musiala. "It's an important game for us," said Musiala.
