Triathlete Frodeno honored as a "Legend of Sport"

Triathlete Jan Frodeno has been honored as a "Legend of Sport" at the German Sports Press Ball.

"It still sounds a bit strange - legend, but of course it's also a very illustrious circle, so I'm very grateful for this award," said Frodeno in the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. The 42-year-old Rhineland native's sporting CV is impressive: an Olympic victory in 2008 was followed by victories at the Ironman World Championships in 2015, 2016 and 2019.

After long periods of injury and several hip operations, Frodeno competed in his last major race around a month ago at the Ironman World Championship in Nice and ended his triathlon career.

Pegasos Prize for basketball world champion

The German national basketball team was previously honored with the Pegasos Award in the "Athletes with Heart" category for their rousing win of the championship title. "We showed what players, what a team can achieve," said national coach Gordon Herbert.

Gordon Herbert's team won the title for the first time at the World Championship in Asia this summer. Has it changed his life? "Not really, I still live in Hagen," said the 64-year-old and laughed. "One of the best decisions I made two years ago was to make Dennis Schröder captain. He has embraced it, he loves playing for his country, it's an honor for him," Herbert said of the star player.

Schröder also thanked him in a video message. "I'm very happy that we got the award," he said. "It's a huge honor for us to be able to represent Germany and wear the eagle on our chest."

Jan Frodeno's triathlon achievements were recognized with an award at the Sports Press Ball, making him a "Legend of Sport," joining a prestigious circle of athletes. Meanwhile, the German basketball team was awarded the Pegasos Prize in the "Athletes with Heart" category, celebrating their historic World Championship win.
