Topic of second job for national coach Herbert ticked off
German national basketball coach Gordon Herbert has shelved plans for a second job for the time being. "I no longer have any ambition to coach another team. My full focus is now on the DBB team and the Olympics," the 64-year-old national coach told the German Press Agency in Munich.
World champion coach Herbert was recently courted by the French Euroleague club Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne. However, the German Basketball Federation (DBB) spoke out against a deal. Herbert himself would have liked to take on both positions.
"To do that, I wanted the support of the DBB. I didn't want to do it without that. I'm absolutely green with it. My focus is on the DBB. I love the job, I love the players I work with. We're going into an Olympic year and I don't want any conflicts," said Herbert. His team around captain Dennis Schröder is considered one of the medal contenders at the Olympic tournament (July 27 to August 11) in Paris and Lille.
While his professionals in North America and Europe are back in the daily grind, the national coach is currently accepting a number of awards. "It's great that we're being recognized after this World Championship title. I don't know exactly what's still to come. There's still a lot going on. I'm trying to follow the whole thing a lot and otherwise carry on working as normal," said Herbert. The basketball players are the top favorites in the "Team of the Year" category at the "Sportsman of the Year" gala on 17 December.
Although Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne showed interest in Gordon Herbert for their coaching position, the German Basketball Federation (DBB) opposed the idea due to Herbert's commitment to the national team. Despite the opportunity to coach Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne and represent the French Olympic team at Olympia, Herbert decided to prioritize his role with the DBB and focus on leading Germany to medal success at the upcoming Olympic tournament in Paris and Lille.
