See how this town gets the most fun out of one of the biggest lakes in the world. In Duluth, Minnesota, Victor Blackwell enjoys Lake Superior in every way imaginable: fishing for lake trout, walking along world’s largest freshwater sandbar, drinking spirits distilled with the lake’s water, and finally — dining at a 100-year-old tavern where the chef cooks his catch of the day.

Top Destinations to Explore in America by 2024

Small metropolises in America boast a wealth of attractions along with bustling crowds. This summer, we're focusing on lesser-known cities that aren't usually the talk of the town - places offering a small-town feel, unique character, and a plethora of sights to explore for a few days or more.

At CNN Travel, we reached out to our network of contributors for suggestions for our first list of America's Best Hidden Gems. We evaluated their favorites and selected the finalists based on the town's attractions, food and drink options, nightlife, cultural scene, identity, accessibility to other interesting spots, and the "wow" factor. We also considered travel essentials, such as lodging options and ease of travel.

Our selections boast a population ranging from about 50,000 residents to around 225,000. They are scattered across the country, showcasing the best of America: towns dedicated to improving their communities. The revitalized neighborhoods and rejuvenated downtown areas, as well as the passion, creativity, and expertise of the residents, create a sense of unity that nurtures both souls and appetites.

Here are our 2024 recommendations:

10. Duluth, Minnesota

Standout Points: Picturesque lakefront, outdoor activities, vibrant beverage scene

Originally known as an industrial, ore-shipping port on the Great Lakes, Duluth has evolved into a sanctuary from the climate crisis. With its location beside Lake Superior, the summer climate is typically mild. The hilly city offers various outdoor activities, a thriving beer scene, a host of lakeside attractions, and a neighborhood highlighting handcrafted goods. You can join the friendly locals in a communal sauna, followed by a dip in refreshing Amity Creek.

9. Knoxville, Tennessee

Standout Points: Relaxed atmosphere, live music, outdoor opportunities

You may recognize Knoxville as the home of the University of Tennessee and the passionate fan base that descends on the city during sports events. Or perhaps you know it as the host of the 1982 World's Fair and its distinctive glass tower. However, you may not be aware that this eastern Tennessee city offers an emerging music scene (watch out Nashville and Memphis!), delightful historic theaters, and delectable cuisine. An expansive 1,500-acre Urban Wilderness area offers easy access to outdoor adventure.

8. Grand Rapids, Michigan

Standout Points: Art and design, beer scene, outdoor activities

Despite being known as "Beer City USA," Grand Rapids is much more than a beer-lover's paradise. With numerous breweries, distilleries, and cideries, Michigan's second-largest city lives up to its moniker. Museums showcase Grand Rapids' deep design roots, while the Grand River's banks offer a peek at the city's family-friendly outdoor attractions. An upcoming amphitheater along the riverbank is part of a broader waterfront revitalization effort.

7. Macon, Georgia

Standout Points: Musical heritage, cultural offerings, architecture

Macon's museums and a revived studio dedicated to its musical heritage earn it high marks in the cultural attractions category. The revitalized downtown area has given way to new restaurants, bars, and a boutique hotel. With a focus on preserving its unique history, a site holding thousands of years of history is Western Georgia's bid for the US's first US national park and preserve co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.

6. Flagstaff, Arizona

Standout Points: Dark skies, outdoor activities, scenic beauty, retro vibe

Sunny days, starry nights, and stunning landscapes draw visitors to this high-elevation city. The San Francisco Peaks, numerous national monuments, the Lowell Observatory, and Flagstaff's status as a Dark Sky City make space exploration accessible for all. The iconic Route 66 runs through here, with retro accommodations catering to weary travelers. The city's Native American history adds another layer to its appeal.

5. San Luis Obispo, California

Standout Points: Scenic beauty, retro vibe, outdoor activities, wineries

A nostalgic, laid-back California vibe awaits in this picturesque town. Wine trails, hiking trails, and the pristine natural environment, with the Pacific Ocean nearby, offer a tranquil escape from the crowded tourist destinations. The charming downtown area transports visitors back to the 20th century, offering a taste of vintage California.

4. Portland, Maine

Standout Points: Exceptional food scene, coastal beauty, outdoor opportunities

This historic harbor town is a culinary hotspot, with cutting-edge dining and traditional seafood establishments reflecting Maine's status as the US's lobster capital. The food scene here has firmly established Portland as a must-visit destination, and the burgeoning craft beer scene offers plenty of opportunities to unwind. The stunning waterfront, with a vibrant center displaying centuries of maritime history and a Victorian-era revival, rounds out this coastal gem.

3. Tacoma, Washington

Standout Points: Breathtaking setting, outdoor access, arts scene

The striking Pacific Northwest backdrop and easy access to outdoor activities make Tacoma an appealing destination. The city's arts scene shines with a variety of museums, public art installations, and performances, offering a glimpse into the town's rich cultural history. A budding wine region adds another dimension to the city's allure, making Tacoma a must-visit for travelers seeking a blend of nature and culture.

  1. Tacoma, Washington

Top-notch: Nature, city landscapes, art

Tacoma's fascinating position between Puget Sound and Mount Rainier provides extraordinary outdoor recreational possibilities, both within and surrounding the city. The city boasts some stunning vistas, thanks to Dale Chihuly, the skilled art glass artisan who hails from Tacoma. At the Museum of Glass, you can immerse yourself in exhibits and witness live glassblowing in the hot shop. Flightseeing tours offer a breathtaking view of the Puyallup Tribe's sacred ancestral lands.

2. Providence, Rhode Island

Excellent: Art, architecture, design, food culture

Providence's enchanting downtown riverfront was developed over decades, with the relocation of rivers and roads to enhance and preserve the city. The rivers have been illuminated by the beloved WaterFire art installation for decades, and public art is everywhere. Providence is also home to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design and its museum. Architecture enthusiasts will find much to marvel at, and Providence's culinary history (with exceptional seafood and Italian cuisine) and diverse eateries guarantee a world-class culinary tour.

1. Richmond, Virginia

Standout: Cultural attractions, dining and cocktails, vibrant neighborhoods

Richmond, Virginia, or "RVA," often overlooked compared to that other capital city a couple of hours away, still manages to score highly for its impressive museums and captivating neighborhoods. Richmond is also grappling with its intricate history. It's not to be missed for its diverse, chef-driven food scene, more than 30 breweries, and easy access to nearby wine country. And its nearly year-round festival lineup includes the mesmerizing Richmond Folk Festival in the autumn.
