Tom Lockyer gets insanely lucky for the second time

During the Premier League match against Bournemouth, Luton captain Tom Lockyer suffers a cardiac arrest. Players and fans react with shock. It remains to be seen how Lockyer's career will continue. This is not the first time his heart has given out.

The good news came a few hours later from the hospital. Tom Lockyer was responsive again after his cardiac arrest in his club Luton Town's Premier League match at AFC Bournemouth and was in a stable condition. The defender and captain of his team was apparently lucky again, for the second time in his career. Back in May, he collapsed in the promotion match against Coventry City and returned to match action following heart surgery.

The next shock moment came on Saturday. The 29-year-old professional footballer collapsed on the pitch after just over an hour, without any involvement from his opponent. He had previously suffered a head injury in the game. Bad memories were immediately evoked, such as the tragic death of Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foé in 2003 in the semi-final of the Confederations Cup or the case of Denmark's Christian Eriksen, who collapsed in the 2021 European Championship match against Finland and has since returned to playing soccer with a pacemaker.

Lockyer was initially treated on the pitch. Players and fans were in shock. Teammate Issa Kaboré prayed for Lockyer on the pitch. To loud applause from the crowd, the Luton professional was eventually carried off the pitch on a stretcher. The referee then sent both teams to the dressing rooms and did not restart the match. The Luton and Bournemouth players only returned to the pitch to thank the fans in the stadium for their condolences. Colleagues such as former Leipzig player Josko Gvardiol and ex-football star Gary Lineker wished Lockyer a speedy recovery.

However, it is questionable whether he will return to the pitch so quickly. After his first collapse in May, he played down the incident. "It was probably much worse for all the other spectators than it was for me. When I came to, I was fine. I never really felt in danger and it definitely wasn't as bad as it looked," Lockyer said in June: "I had the operation to fix the problem and it wasn't going to happen again. There's really no reason to say why it happened. I've been given the all-clear. I just want to draw a line under it now and move on."
