Today, German NFL professionals are experiencing a highly unpleasant day.
Ouch for Equanimeous St. Brown and Jakob Johnson: Both Players Find Themselves on the Outside Looking In
NFL wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown learned a harsh lesson when he didn't make the final cut for the New Orleans Saints, after switching teams from the Chicago Bears. At 27 years old, he was released from the 53-man roster as per the team's announcement. St. Brown, who's the older brother of star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions), had joined the Saints this year.
Similarly, Jakob Johnson's chances of making the roster in New York Giants seemed to take a turn for the worse only eleven days after signing with them. The German-born fullback, who was also cut, reportedly had his hopes dashed. Johnson, who had previously played for the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders, was in his third US-league stop.
German linebacker Julius Welschof also didn't make the cut. The draft pick of Steelers, who suffered from a knee injury, was placed on the injured reserve list on decision day. Meanwhile, 27-year-old offensive tackle Brandon Coleman managed to make the 53-man roster for Washington Commanders, ensuring his spot in the NFL for another year.
Equanimeous St. Brown had left the Green Bay Packers in 2022, transferring to the Chicago Bears, following three years with the team. On the other hand, Johnson's contract with the Las Vegas Raiders ended after last season. He joined the Giants in the vital phase of pre-season preparation, featured in the game against Houston Texans a day later, and played against New York Jets six days later. However, despite his efforts, Johnson didn't survive the roster cut. He had spent two seasons in Vegas, and before that, played for the six-time champion New England Patriots from 2019 to 2021.
Despite his strong performance in pre-season games with the New York Giants, NFL fullback Jakob Johnson was unfortunately released from the team's roster. Equanimeous St. Brown, also an NFL player, faced a similar fate with the New Orleans Saints, marking another challenge in his NFL career within the league known as the NFL.
