Experiencing Venice

A Walk on Giudecca

Two-story houses with shops for daily needs and bars line the promenade. Inside the island, where a few fishermen still live, hidden gardens with oleanders, dwarf palms, agaves reveal themselves. The straight canals give a clear view of the open water. Along the cloisters of the former monastery Cosma e Damiano, workshops, galleries, goldsmiths, ceramic workshops, and bookbinders have settled.

Castello

Leave the Markusplatz to the left. Through alleys and over canals, where vegetable sellers moor their boats, one goes to Venice's counterculture in the Castello district. Popular for its pizza and concert evenings is the occupied cultural center Morion (Calle del Morion 2951). Every Friday, people from all over the world party here with live music. The terrace offers markets and stalls.

Bevilacqua Weaving

The weavers work on 300-year-old pedal looms. One can watch their intricate handwork over their shoulders. They produce only 30 centimeters of silk fabric in a day. The fabrics adorn the White House, the Kremlin, the Dresden Residence, and Mariah Carey's living room. Designers create Haute Couture from these fabrics. The visit ends in the showroom, where one can learn to distinguish the various processing methods. The guided tour in English must be booked in advance, costs 15 Euro and lasts 40 minutes. Booking by phone at +39/041/72 15 66 or by email: [email protected]. Santa Croce 1320, www.luigi-bevilacqua.com

Santa Maria Assunta

Wonderful ornaments under the portico, mosaics, and priceless paintings in the basilica's interior: The church on Torcello, founded in 639 as a bishop's seat, radiates an aura of solitude. Transport: Line 12 from Fondamenta Nuove to Burano, then Line 9 to Torcello

Jewish Quarter

The oldest European ghetto, founded in 1516 during the Venetian Republic, is a unique experience on a comprehensive tour. One senses its changing history and learns more about Jewish life, which shaped the northern part of the Cannaregio district for centuries. The ghetto has five synagogues and a Jewish cemetery. The guided tour in English costs 15 Euro. Tel. +39/041/524 60 83, www.ghettovenezia.com
