Threatening "storm" brewing at HSV

Only one away win, just four points from the last four games: The situation surrounding HSV coach Tim Walter is anything but calm. The Nuremberg game could point the way for his future - after all, Hamburg want to finally get back into the first Bundesliga.

Job anxiety? Nervousness ahead of the "final game"? Not at all, Tim Walter didn't let on. "I know what Sturm means in Hamburg," said the coach of struggling Hamburger SV: "It's all about HSV. Our mission for the weekend is three points. If we fulfill that, we'll have a nice Christmas."

But the pressure is on, of course, and the unintentionally short-shaven Walter ("it was a faux pas") is probably doomed to win at 1 FC Nürnberg (1pm/Sky and in the ntv.de live ticker). After just four points from the last four league games, the wind is blowing hard around Walter's ears at the Waterkant. "Walter's job is at stake now," wrote the "Hamburger Morgenpost" during the week: "Is he still the right man to achieve promotion?"

And because, according to "Kicker", there is something "fundamentally wrong" at HSV, the game in Nuremberg could become "a fateful game" for Walter ("Hamburger Abendblatt"). "Of course it's important for us to win a game. But we also know what we can do during the winter break to ultimately achieve our goals," said Walter: "And those are clearly promotion."

The big analysis after the Nuremberg game

But do the club bosses around Jonas Boldt still believe that the 48-year-old will succeed at the third attempt? After the Nuremberg game, the sports board and the coach will meet for a major analysis - which will also include a discussion about Walter's future.

He has been coaching HSV since the summer of 2021 and has been given more time than any of his predecessors in the 2nd division. And he has achieved amazing things, uniting the fans behind him and giving the team a spectacular style of play. But Walter has simply not managed to get a grip on a defense that is always far too susceptible. Mistakes in his "Sturm und Drang" soccer are punished by far too many goals conceded. Sovereignty? Not a chance.

The results of the last few weeks are therefore sobering. HSV have only won four of their last eleven league games and have only managed one away win so far this season. This will hardly be enough to achieve the desired return to the Bundesliga. Added to this is the team's elimination in the DFB Cup round of 16 against Hertha BSC.

But the players are backing their coach. "In two and a half years, he has proven that he can stand in the wind quite well," said captain Sebastian Schonlau on Sky: "We are happy that he is at the helm. The team knows that there has to be a really big wave to knock him down - and I haven't seen that wave yet." It is possible, however, that Nuremberg could spark this wave.
