Thomas Müller says 'farewell to the federal eagle today'

Thomas Müller will not be playing for Germany as expected. The 2014 World Cup champion officially bids farewell to the German football team after 131 international appearances.

Thomas Müller, the icon, ends his successful career in the German football team as expected. "When I was allowed to play my first international match over 14 years ago, I wouldn't have believed all of this. Today, I say goodbye to the Bundesadler after 131 international games with 45 goals," the 34-year-old shared in a video message.

There have been "great victories and bitter defeats" in the German team, as the 2014 World Cup winner further stated. "Sometimes lying on the ground, only to rise again - competing against the best players in the world and playing alongside fantastic teammates, with whom I have experienced unforgettable moments."

The professional at FC Bayern, who still has a one-year contract in Munich, made his debut in the German jersey in March 2010 against Argentina - the same opponent he faced in his greatest triumph in the WM-Final 2014 (1:0 n.V.). Four years earlier, he was the top scorer at his WM debut. He started in 104 of the German lineups, was brought on as a substitute in the EM quarterfinal loss against Spain for the 27th and last time.

Müller participated in four World Championships (15 goals, six assists) and the same number of European Championships (17/0/2). Besides Lothar Matthäus (150 appearances) and Miroslav Klose (137), Müller played more often for Germany. Additionally, record scorer Klose (71), Gerd Müller (68), Lukas Podolski (49), Jürgen Klinsmann, and Rudi Völler (both 47) scored more goals for the DFB squad.

Thomas Müller's absence from the Football-Nationalteam is felt, especially since he led FC Bayern Munich to numerous soccar victories with his skills. Despite bidding farewell to the German football team, Müller's impressive record of 131 appearances and 45 goals with the DFB remains unmatched by many players.
