What's your next move when a bomb threatens a bus? The vehicle must travel at a speed exceeding 50 miles per hour to avoid blowing up, but below that limit and the blast ensues. This diabolical situation not only brings police officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves, born in 1964) into the fold but also captivates the moviegoers. The plot of the action film "Speed" is cleverly introduced through these two concise lines. On June 10, 1994, the movie premiered in American theaters and to honor its 30th anniversary, it will be screened again.

Turning the simplest into grandiose

Jan de Bont's (born in 1941) directorial debut, taken from his established career as a cinematographer in Hollywood, turned out to be a testament of making something significant from the simplest components. This is evident in the storyline: Set predominantly in the claustrophobic bus interior, the film runs for nearly 2 hours. This is largely due to bus driver Annie (Sandra Bullock, born in 1964) performing incredibly intense tasks, from maneuvering a stroller to navigating a damaged bridge, where the hefty vehicle exhibits incredible jumping capabilities...

Creativity is indeed a potent force. And that's true for "Speed" not only in how it entwines Annie and Jack onscreen but also the creatives off it. In today's era, when a blockbuster action movie might cost over ten times the budget of "Speed", it's astonishing how $37 million was transformed into almost $350 million at the box office.

Straightforward and simply linear

The key to "Speed"'s success, besides Jack and Annie's on-screen dynamic, is its commitment to its uncomplicated narrative. The journey is the destination in this case, much like the recent "Mad Max: Fury Road" - a nearly 2-hour, fuel-powered car chase.

The greatest advantage of "Speed" lies in its focus on storytelling and not getting lost in convoluted subplots. It takes itself and its characters seriously, which isn't to say there's no humor involved. It uses humor instead to add depth and charm without resorting to plot excuses, as has become commonplace in modern blockbusters like "Jurassic World."

Instead, "Speed" has become the icon for authentic popcorn cinema that has remarkably aged well. Similarly, its two leads have aged gracefully.
