The Taylor Swift magic has faded
The Philadelphia Eagles are playing a furious season and are dreaming of playing in the Super Bowl again. But the 49ers burst into the middle of these dreams and pluck the Eagles. Champions Kansas City also lose, partly because the superstar has a bad night.
Yikes, what a blow: the Philadelphia Eagles have lost a home game for the first time this season and must fear for their home field advantage in the playoffs five weeks before the end of the main round. After four recent comeback victories, last season's Super Bowl participants lost 19:42 to the San Francisco 49ers in the most important game of the matchday. With two defeats now, the Dallas Cowboys could draw level with the Eagles at the top of the NFC in a direct duel next week. The 49ers are also breathing down the Eagles' necks with nine wins and three losses.
The roles were reversed in the rematch of last season's NFC Conference Final, which the 49ers clearly lost after quarterback Brock Purdy was injured. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts even had to be taken off the field and examined in the fourth quarter - but by then the game was as good as decided. Purdy excelled with four touchdown passes and throws for 314 yards. Deebo Samuel caught two touchdowns on passes and had another on a run.
Despite prominent support, the Chiefs stumble: Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs conceded their fourth defeat of the season in a 19-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Quarterback superstar Patrick Mahomes looked extremely unconfident, committing many unnecessary penalties and allowing the Packers to gain a lot of space in individual scenes. The Chiefs were unlucky in the final phase when two clear infringements of the rules by Packers defenders on long passes were not recognized by the referees. Packers quarterback Jordan Love impressed with three touchdown passes, while Mahomes only had one successful pass into the end zone and made a crucial mistake with 4:37 minutes remaining.
The crowd at Lambeau Field was full of celebrities: pop icon and fan Taylor Swift cheered on the Chiefs' Travis Kelce, while gymnastics queen Simone Biles kept her fingers crossed for her husband and Packers safety Jonathan Owens. Incidentally, it was the fifth time Swift had watched her boyfriend play live in the stadium - and the first time the Chiefs had lost. It was Swift's first visit to the stadium since October 22. Since then, the singer has been busy with her tour, which is currently on hiatus again. Swift watched the game alongside the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Brittany Mahomes.
Lions get off to a flying start: Amon-Ra St. Brown caught his sixth touchdown, equaling his best score from the previous NFL season. The 24-year-old German-American scored in the Detroit Lions' 33:28 win over the New Orleans Saints. After his touchdown and extra point in the first quarter, the Lions already led 21:0, but still had to tremble against the Saints for their ninth win of the season. After a good start, things didn't go smoothly for St. Brown either. Only two passes caught on six throws in his direction were the negative figure of his season. With nine wins and three defeats, the Lions now have a better record after twelve games than they have had since 1962. They can plan for their first play-off appearance since the 2016/2017 season.
New England's situation is getting worse: For former champions New England Patriots and their long-time successful coach Bill Belichick, things are getting darker and darker. In their 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Patriots failed to score a point for the second time this season. Belichick's plan to replace the hapless quarterback Mac Jones with Bailey Zappe had no effect. Even the replacement was unable to prevent the fifth consecutive defeat and the tenth of the season. Zappe managed just 141 yards and also conceded five sacks. Added to this was a lost fumble by running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who injured his ankle during the action and did not return. For the Chargers, on the other hand, Khalil Mack played big and, with two sacks in the game, became the NFL leader with 15 sacks in total.
Indianapolis wins wild exchange of blows: With 2:31 minutes left in overtime, Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew found his favorite receiver Michael Pittman in the end zone for the decisive touchdown of the game. Prior to that, the Titans had scored a field goal on their first drive. The Colts, who had even fewer total yards than the Titans (355:381), had a sequence of two blocked Titans punts in a row in the third quarter. The first was recovered by Grant Stuard for a touchdown. However, Minshew then threw a wild errant pass, leaving the door open for the home side. The Titans, whose punter Ryan Stonehouse may have suffered a serious injury on the second blocked punt, had victory on their feet in regulation time after a touchdown by DeAndre Hopkins, but kicker Nick Folk missed the extra point - with holder Ryan Tannehill, who was standing in for Stonehouse and did not execute the hold ideally.
The Denver Broncos' great run ended bitterly: With seconds remaining, the Broncos had another chance to turn the game around, but Russell Wilson's pass into the end zone landed with Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward to decide the game. It was Wilson's third interception, with the previous two going to cornerback Derek Stingley. This ended Denver's five-game winning streak, the longest currently running in the NFL. The Broncos struggled from the outset, particularly on offense. They did not convert a single one of their six 3rd downs. Even though the Texans were superior in the passing game in particular, most drives ended in punts, meaning they were unable to pull away early. In addition, rookie receiver Tank Dell suffered a serious injury in the first quarter. He will miss the rest of the season with a fractured fibula. In the final quarter, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud had to leave the field with a suspected concussion after he was slow to get back on his feet after a quarterback sneak and was clearly swaying. He seemed fine afterward, however, remaining on the sideline and even giving an interview.
Miami's offense on a roll: Also with nine wins and three losses, the Miami Dolphins won 45-15 against the Washington Commanders. Dolphins pass receiver Tyreek Hill scored two touchdowns and extended his lead at the top of the leaderboard.
