Marital crisis with Frederik and Mary? - The Royal expert responds to the rumors

## Frederik and Mary visited Greenland again with their twins Vincent and Josephine. Why is this land so important to the King?

Julia Melchior: Greenland is part of his biography. In the year 2000, he participated in the four-month sled expedition Sirius 2000 in North Greenland. This experience, as well as extreme sports and military elite training at the Danish Combat Swimmer Unit, helped him accept his fate. He pushed his limits, showed his capabilities, and earned recognition for it. He had to go through this detour to find himself and his role. As a young person, Frederik initially did not understand his predetermined life. Greenland was a milestone in his development.

What role does Greenland play for the Kingdom of Denmark?

Melchior: Greenland is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but it is increasingly striving for independence. The King plays an important role in maintaining unity. As an independent head of state, he represents all territories. And since he has a personal connection to Greenland, he is respected there. From a geopolitical perspective, many global powers are interested in Greenland. It is therefore important for the Danish Crown to maintain relationships with Greenland. Historically, this is also a very sensitive topic. In the post-war period, Denmark committed much injustice. There were social experiments to turn Inuit children into Danes. They were taken to Denmark, forced to learn Danish, and given Danish names.

Could that be a reason why the royal twins have Inuit names as second names: Prince Vincent is named Minik and Princess Josephine Ivalo...

Melchior: The royal couple has never commented on why they gave the twins Greenlandic second names. This is likely related to Frederik's love for this territory. But we can also interpret it as a gesture. The royal family cannot express themselves politically or apologize for the wrongs committed, but they can set signs - and they have managed to do so. The fact that the twins were accompanied by their parents on this trip was kept secret until the last minute. This was a great surprise with a wonderful message behind it: Given that children rarely accompany them, taking the twins with them can be seen as a gift to the local population.

Melchior: There are no signs that this marriage is going through a crisis. As a couple, parents, and royal pair, we experience them as a harmonious unit. In the last few months, there have been many occasions where the royal pair have shown signs of affection and familiarity - in official moments, but just as much when they felt unobserved. Even at the time of the throne change in January, I asked how I should classify this scandal. From the royal family, I received the answer: There is no such scandal within our family.

Those are indeed pleasant news. What would you say, why do the two fit so well?

Melchior: They are a great pair. Frederik and Mary complement each other well, whether as a royal pair or as parents. As parents, they have a very important task, as they have to prepare their son Christian for his role as crown prince and later king, while at the same time helping his three siblings to stand on their own feet. In doing so, Frederik and Mary work well together. Mary, who comes from an Australian background and thus has a completely different background, is fully aware of her responsibility. And when one meets Christian - which happens quite often - one can see that the parents have succeeded. Christian makes a self-confident and positive impression and seems to bear his destiny lightly, just as his father did at the age of 18. A tribute to the parents for having achieved this.

Since the drama around Prince Harry, it has also become very important to prepare the younger siblings and all other children for an independent life...

Melchior: Preparing the younger siblings for an independent life is no longer an option. It is no longer acceptable to the taxpayer that several family members, who have no function, represent the royal house. And many are not happy. See Prince Harry. He was never prepared to stand on his own feet. The British missed that. On the other hand, he was also missed by the royal house. He was a great source of sympathy and achievement. But his wife should have shared in that. And the project has failed miserably.

When the siblings of Christian are later released from their duties and privileges, does it mean that the focus will be on a proper vocational training?

Melchior: Yes. And not just military training. It must also be possible for a prince or princess to become a doctor or teacher, if they want to. In Britain, that was not common until recently. Unlike in the Dutch royal family. Queen Beatrix and her husband Prince Claus have ensured that the brothers of Willem-Alexander lead an independent life. One studied aerospace technology, the other law. Both have also studied economics and then made a career outside the royal house. That is very important and is now being valued more and more everywhere.
