The Premier League confirms decision to retain VAR system.
In both the German Bundesliga and the English Premier League, the use of video evidence (VAR) in football games remains heatedly debated. Most recently, Wolverhampton Wanderers proposed completely getting rid of it. Regrettably, their initiative was unsuccessful.
Recently, football clubs in the English Premier League voted to continue using the VAR in games moving forward. This was determined at the annual meeting for the league, where 19 clubs reportedly supported the decision. Eliminating the VAR would have required at least 14 negative votes.
Wolverhampton Wanderers had previously put forth a proposal to eliminate the VAR altogether. However, no other clubs supported the idea. Wolverhampton has been outspoken about their displeasure with the VAR, highlighting its numerous drawbacks and how it has tainted the essence of football. They believe that the increase in accuracy does not justify the potentially negative impact on the sport and its brand.
The Premier League has stated their intention to improve the controversial system. It has been in use since the 2019/20 season. Their goals are to achieve greater consistency, cut back on interruptions in the flow of the game, and shorten delays. To achieve these objectives, they plan to implement a new semi-automatic offside technology come fall.
Furthermore, stadium announcements and, where possible, replays on stadium screens are to heighten transparency and clarity for spectators. This is meant to enhance the VAR process and enrich the viewing experience for spectators. Additionally, the Premier League plans to run a new communication campaign in collaboration with fan groups and fans to clear up VAR's role in football for all participants and fans.
Unfortunately, this outcome is likely to disappoint many football enthusiasts. Numerous criticisms have surrounded the VAR, much like in the Bundesliga. A survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association in the summer of last year revealed that only 5% of those who'd witnessed VAR in a stadium gave it a positive rating. Additionally, former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp has also spoken out against the technology.
