"Full House" actor Dave Coulier - The origin of the title for his successful role was revealed by him.
Dave Coulier, the 64-year-old actor who played Uncle Joey in the hit sitcom "Full House," has disclosed the amusing background behind his character's surname, Gladstone. Joining guest Debra Stipe (62) on his rewatch podcast "Full House Rewind," he shared that he had the freedom to pick Uncle Joey's last name and chose "Gladstone" after a witty joke about being high.
Deciding on a Last Name
During the podcast, he let Stipe in on a secret: "I could choose my own character's last name, did you know that? Uncle Joey's last name." When asked by Stipe whether there was any symbolism behind the name, Coulier shed light on his choice: "It was like a pun: 'I'm glad I'm stoned.' You know, I'm a comedian, so I thought it was a funny name." The terms "glad" and "stoned" signify happiness and being high, respectively.
Pursuing the Joey Role
In addition, Coulier discussed his uncertainty about securing the role of Joey Gladstone. While he received positive feedback from one producer, another desired him for the role of Danny Tanner that eventually went to Bob Saget. At first, Coulier thought he had blown his audition, saying, "I thought: 'I just messed it up. That's it. I didn't understand that I was to audition for the father role now.'" Despite this uncertainty, he knew which character he wanted to play: "I don't care who comes in now, that's my Joey. That's my character." He ended up landing the part.
Throughout "Full House," which aired from 1987 to 1995, and its Netflix sequel "Fuller House," which ran from 2016 to 2020, Coulier captured viewers' hearts portraying Joey Gladstone.
