The number one tennis World Ranker is sick for Olympia

Alexander Zverev has one less Gold contender at the Olympics: Jannik Sinner withdraws. The Italian world number one is ill, doctors urgently advise him against participation.

The world number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Olympic tennis tournament a day before the draw. The South Tyrolean, who won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year, gave as reason for his withdrawal an abscess.

After a one-week sand court training for the preparation of the tournament in Roland Garros, he began to feel "unwell," the 22-year-old reported. "I spent a few days resting," he said, after which a doctor "diagnosed an abscess" and urgently advised him against participation in Paris.

"Missing the Games is a big disappointment, as it was one of my main goals for this season," Sinner said. He had hardly expected "the honor to represent my country at this very important event."

Sinner was one of the main contenders for Tokyo Olympics champion Alexander Zverev, who enters the Stade Roland Garros as a favorite. He will now support the Italian athletes "from home," Sinner said. The 22-year-old was also entered in the doubles competition with Lorenzo Musetti and was ranked first there.

The withdrawal of Jannik Sinner means less competition for tennis Gold at the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris for players like Alexander Zverev. Despite his illness and an abscess diagnosis, Sinner expressed his disappointment in missing the opportunity to participate in the Olympics, which was one of his main goals for the season.
