The iconic Cyclone roller coaster in New York City has been shut down permanently.
Brooklyn, NY (AP): The iconic Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster in New York City was temporarily halted this week, halting its operation indefinitely.
The 97-year-old wooden roller coaster at Luna Park encountered a problem with a damaged chain sprocket in the motor room while ascending on Thursday, August 22. The issue led to the operators halting the ride mid-course, and passengers were safely disembarked without incident, as reported by New York City’s Department of Buildings.
Captured on social media, footage shows a rider being guided down the tracks with care.
Inspectors from the New York City's Department of Buildings visited the site on Friday and issued a citation for the faulty equipment and failure to promptly report the incident to them.
A notice on Luna Park’s website from Sunday stated that the Cyclone will resume operation once the repairs are complete and the roller coaster passes inspection.
"Safety is our top priority at Luna Park in Coney Island, and meticulous maintenance and rigorous testing are conducted daily before Luna Park opens and throughout the day as needed," the statement on the website read. "Coney Island Cyclone – a 97-year-old roller coaster – is maintained and tested diligently every day."
The temporary halt of the Cyclone roller coaster has sparked travel news interest, as visitors plan their trips to Luna Park in anticipation of its reopening. Following the incident, stricter inspections and maintenance procedures for all roller coasters at Luna Park have been implemented for the safety of its passengers.
