The German Football Association (DFB) is putting forth its bid for the 2029 European Women's Championship.
After the triumph of the men's European Championship at their home this past summer, the German Football Association (DFB) is now gunning for the opportunity to host the Women's European Championship in 2029. Regrettably, their bid for the 2027 World Cup failed back in May. Now, they've got a hectic 15 months ahead before the decision is made.
The DFB has declared its intentions to put forth a bid for the Women's European Championship in 2029. This was announced today following a decision made by the DFB board during their meeting. Bernd Neuendorf, the DFB President, referred to this project as a "showpiece" event.
Neuendorf underscored that the advancement of women's football and the execution of the FF 27 strategy are of paramount importance to the DFB. He expressed optimism that this bid would serve as an "extra impetus" in these areas. Heike Ullrich, the DFB Secretary General, shared her confidence that "we would make a great and dependable host for this kind of large-scale sporting event," given the "exuberant UEFA EURO 2024" experience.
Allocation in approximately 15 months
The DFB plans to submit its interest declaration to UEFA by the September 24 deadline. Following this, they intend to get in touch with and invite stadium operators who meet UEFA's criteria, as well as the prospective cities, to submit applications as potential host venues.
Interested associations have until March 12, 2025 to submit their preliminary application documents, and the deadline for legal documents and other essential materials is on August 28, 2025. The host is expected to be chosen by the UEFA Executive Committee in December 2025. The Women's European Championship 2029, featuring 16 teams and 31 matchdays, is scheduled for June and July.
The last time the DFB attempted to secure a major women's tournament ended in disappointment: The joint bid with Belgium and the Netherlands to host the 2027 World Cup was rejected at the FIFA Congress in May, with Brazil being instead awarded the event. Germany has previously hosted the Women's European Championship twice, the last time being in 2001. The upcoming Women's European Championship 2025 will be held in Switzerland.
The German Football Association (DFB) is aiming to host the Women's European Championship in 2029, as announced by its president, Bernd Neuendorf. He sees this bid as an opportunity to further promote women's football and enhance the FF 27 strategy.
With the September 24 deadline approaching for interest declarations, the DFB is actively preparing its bid, inviting suitable stadium operators and cities to apply as potential host venues.
