Director Sohnke Wortmann (64) is rounding off the Name Trilogy this winter. After "The First Name" (2018) and "The Last Name" (2022), "The Nickname" will hit German cinemas on December 19, 2024. This was announced by production company Constantin Film on Tuesday in a press release. There's even a short teaser for the comedy.

After the living room in "The First Name" and Lanzarote in "The Last Name", the Tyrolean Alps now serve as the backdrop. Anna (Janina Uhse, 34) and Thomas (Florian David Fitz, 49) have invited guests to their wedding. Thomas refers to his daughter Paula as the gender-neutral 'Paulchen', which annoys Anna. This is the titular nickname that drives the main conflict this time.

Here's what's happened since "The Last Name"

In the large family of Böttchers, Wittmanns, Bergers, and Königs, a lot has changed since "The Last Name". Anna has finally become an actress, and Thomas is on the verge of joining the board of an real estate company, provided he passes the mandatory sensitivity training.

Stephan (Christoph Maria Herbst, 58) was fired from his university after an incident. His wife Elisabeth (Caroline Peters, 52) is secretly trading bitcoins. Dorothea (Iris Berben, 73) and René (Justus von Dohnányi, 63) are now parents to twins, with René becoming a helicopter parent.

New to the ensemble are Jona Volkmann and Kya-Celina Barucki (20), who play Cajus and Antigone, the woke young offspring of Stephan and Elisabeth.

"The First Name" became a cinema hit in 2018, with Thomas claiming he wanted to name his child with Anna 'Adolf'. The comedy was based on a French film by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière, which in turn was based on their stage play. The sequel sparked debate over Dorothea taking René's last name.

"The Last Name" was not based on a French original, but on an original screenplay by Claudius Plattling. He also wrote the script for "The Nickname".

Despite the success of "The First Name" and the controversy surrounding "The Last Name," the sunken man of the trilogy, Stephan, faces new challenges. His dismissal from the university amplifies his struggle, leading him to explore alternative sources of income, such as his wife's secret bitcoin trading activities.
