The first Germans are mixing up the Olympic Games at
For Alexandra Popp and Co, it's serious. The DFB-women start against Australia in the Olympic Games. The German handballers also mix it up - and for the archers, it goes into the qualification.
Since Wednesday, the first competitions of the Olympic Games have been running in Paris. From a German perspective, it will get interesting for the first time on this Thursday. One day before the official opening ceremony, the handballers and footballers get started.
9.30 am, Archery: For Michelle Kroppen, Charline Schwarz and Katharina Bauer, it's the qualification. They have to shoot 72 arrows for further progress in the Olympics. And in the run-up, Bauer experienced the worst-case scenario, as her bow didn't make the flight to Paris with her but was only delivered with a delay. She couldn't acclimate to the competition venue as well as her competitors. For the three Germans, it's about a good starting position in the individual - and about positioning themselves well for the team competition. Moreover, it decides who will join Florian Unruh in the fight for medals in the Mixed-Team.
1:15 pm, Archery: A few hours later, Unruh is then in the qualification himself. The 31-year-old is the only German in the Men's competition. The two qualification archery competitions are not televised or streamed.
4 pm, Handball: The German handball women face South Korea in their first Olympic participation since 2008 in the opener. The match can be seen at Eurosport and on ZDF's livestream.
Since in the preliminary round, top teams like Denmark, Norway, and Sweden are waiting, a win to start the tournament is almost mandatory. Only the four best teams from each of the two six-team groups qualify for the subsequent knockout phase.
7 pm, Football: The German football team with coach Horst Hrubesch is challenged by Australia in Marseille. The match against the fourth place of the World Cup of the previous year is on ZDF, ZDF livestream, and Eurosport, and can also be followed in the ntv.de liveticker.
The team is led by captain Alexandra Popp from VfL Wolfsburg. She was spared in the test matches due to a foot inflammation. The 33-year-old won the gold medal with the German team in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
4:05 pm, Television Announcement: If you're a fan of handball, tune in to Eurosport or ZDF's livestream at 4:05 pm, as the DFB-Women, representing Germany, take on South Korea in their Olympic Games 2024 debut in handball.
8 pm, Soccer Coverage: Later in the day, don't miss the DFB-Women's soccer match against Australia at 8 pm, where Captain Alexandra Popp and her team aim to defend their Olympic title, which they earned at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
