Wenders is among the founding members of the Film Academy of Europe and held the position of its president from 1996 to 2020.
He has been an Oscar documentary nominee three times: in 2000 for "Buena Vista Social Club", in 2012 for the 3D dance film "Pina" about Pina Bausch, and in 2015 for "The Salt of the Earth" about Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado.
