NHL: News about the National Hockey League - The Edmonton Oilers are one victory away from clinching the final spot.
The Edmonton Oilers haven't reached the Stanley Cup Final in the North American ice hockey league, NHL, for 18 years. However, they're now just one win away from achieving that goal after defeating the Dallas Stars in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. By winning 3:1 on the road, the Oilers took a 3:2 lead in the series.
Neither team managed to score a goal in overtime during the first four games. That all changed in Game 5 as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins successfully netted a rebound following a shot from Evan Bouchard, giving the Oilers the lead in the first period (15th minute).
Nugent-Hopkins wasn't done there. He also scored early in the second period during a power play, assisted by Leon Draisaitl (22nd minute). This was the 17th assist for Draisaitl in the current playoffs.
Four minutes later, Philip Broberg secured the victory with his very first playoff goal, which he scored from the blue line (26th minute). The Stars were only able to score once in the third period (55th minute).
Now, the Edmonton Oilers have the chance to move on to the final on Monday morning (CET) in their own arena, Rogers Place.

The Edmonton Oilers, who last appeared in the Stanley Cup Final in the NHL 18 years ago, are now on the brink of returning, with a victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 5 putting them one win away from the entry into the final. The Stars, who had previously kept the series score tied in overtime, were unable to match the Oilers' offensive prowess in Game 5, as Leon Draisaitl assisted on two Oilers' goals, including Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' power play goal that gave Edmonton the lead in the second period. The Dallas Stars managed to score once in the third period, but it was too little, too late, as Philip Broberg's blue line goal in the second period proved to be the decisive score for the Edmonton Oilers. With a victory in their own arena, Rogers Place, on Monday morning (CET), the Oilers will advance to the NHL final and have a chance to claim the prestigious Stanley Cup.
