The DFB is revealing its squad for the European Championship in a disjointed manner.

Germany's football federation is thinking outside the box. Instead of revealing their entire squad for the upcoming European Championships all at once, they're dropping names one by one. This strategy is part of a well-thought-out plan.

Take the heartwarming story of Rashid Hamid, a geriatric nurse, and his 93-year-old patient, Lotti. Rashid surprised Lotti with a cake that had a picture of Jonathan Tah, a player in the tournament, on it. When Rashid told her Jonathan would be representing Germany at the championships, she had a quick witted comment: "He needs to shave his beard!" So, shave his beard!

This is how national coach Julian Nagelsmann revealed the second player in his provisional squad. The public was left wondering who's next and when they would be announced. The process started on Sunday evening, with the unexpected announcement of Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck, and will continue across different platforms until the official squad is announced on Thursday in Berlin.

The goal here is to create a buzz around the event and build anticipation for the potential summer success story. It doesn't matter if the names are not unexpected, like that of Leverkusen's Jonathan Tah, as long as their presentation alongside endearing characters like Lotti creates sympathy.

Nagelsmann has set his standards high

Nagelsmann talked about his selection process in an upcoming ARD documentary called "Deutschland. Fußball. Sommermärchen 2024?". "It's all about the mix!" He emphasized the importance of players who are willing to put in the work and players who can pull off the decisive passes at the end. Everyone, from leaders like Toni Kroos to substitutes like Marc-André ter Stegen, need to play their part fully.

Schlotterbeck expressed his gratitude on Instagram after learning he was nominated. "Incredibly grateful to be nominated for the upcoming European Championship in my own country!" he wrote. His nomination may push other players, like Dortmund's Mats Hummels and Frankfurt's Robin Koch, to the edge of exclusion.

Nagelsmann has confirmed two players, Toni Kroos and Marc-André ter Stegen, to be included in the squad. Many other players, including Dortmund's Niclas Füllkrug and possibly some Stuttgart players like Angelo Stiller, are waiting with bated breath to see if they've made the cut.

Edin Terzić, coach of Dortmund, is hopeful that more of his players will be selected. "We would very much like to have a slightly larger squad than the last time we were nominated," he said. His players have performed well throughout the season, so he's optimistic.

As for Goretzka, the odds aren't in his favor. He's been trying hard to impress Nagelsmann, but it seems more likely that Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller will get the nod instead. Nagelsmann has been watching Stiller closely and has been impressed by his recent performances.
