- The contentious fashion fad under scrutiny

A questionable fashion fad that's been causing quite a stir in the style world is making its presence known: bleached eyebrows. This trend is everywhere, especially on the runways, with models like Rebecca Mir (32) and Stefanie Giesinger (27) from Germany hopping on the bandwagon. Let's delve deeper into this intriguing fashion phenomenon.

Where did this trend begin?

Although it's garnered significant attention in recent years and dominates many runways, the roots of bleached eyebrows can be traced back quite some time. Going as far back as the Middle Ages, individuals in Europe started removing their eyebrows. During the Elizabethan era, bleaching or removing eyebrows altogether was quite common.

The beauty trend saw a comeback in the rebellious punk scene of the '80s, serving as an act of defiance against beauty norms. In the '90s and early 2000s, bleached eyebrows became increasingly prominent in the fashion industry. Though it never entirely disappeared, the trend reemerged in 2023, particularly due to celebrities rekindling interest and sparking heated discussions.

Why the fascination with bleached brows?

The reasons behind this trend are multifaceted. Some designers might wish to highlight the simplicity of the face, drawing attention to their collections. Others may aim to make a statement, as bleached eyebrows provide a facelift and alter facial proportions depending on the individual's face shape.

Who's driving this trend?

Madonna (65) was one of the trend's pioneers, debuting the look in 1992, despite facing criticism at that time. But the icon hardly let criticism deter her; she reemerged sporting bleached eyebrows again in January and February 2023.

Singer and actress Lady Gaga (38) also seems to be a fan of the trend. She first captivated fans with her bold and unconventional appearances on red carpets in 2016, displaying her barely visible eyebrows. Since then, Gaga has been consistent in rocking the trendy bleached brows.

Bleached Brows at the Met Gala

The Met Gala, an annual fashion event known for pushing the envelope, is likely no stranger to this controversial beauty trend. Indeed, Katy Perry (39), Kim Kardashian (43), Kendall Jenner (28), and Zendaya (27) have all made appearances with their eyebrows bleached.

Model and actress Julia Fox (34) has even adopted bleached eyebrows as her signature look, pairing them with dramatic makeup for an unforgettable appearance.

Arriving in Germany too

It was only a matter of time before this trend reached German stars. Stefanie Giesinger was the first to be spotted with bleached eyebrows in July. "taff" moderator Rebecca Mir followed suit, revealing her transformation in an Instagram video and even making headlines with a daring red dress and bleached brows at an awards ceremony.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it, the increasing popularity of bleached eyebrows among celebrities has undeniably fueled its resurgence in 2023.

Despite facing criticism in the past, Madonna and Lady Gaga have stood firm in their love for bleached eyebrows, setting trends and inspiring others to embrace the look.
