Euro 2024 - The big jitters ahead of the hammer group: how the draw for the home European Championship is going
Denmark, the Netherlands, defending champions Italy. The German national soccer team faces an enormously challenging group for the home European Championship when the draw is made this Saturday (18:00/ZDF, RTL and MagentaTV) in Hamburg. However, the preliminary round with Albania, Slovenia and a play-off participant is also possible. Julian Nagelsmann can only wait and see - but at least he is the first national team coach to know.
The draw pots 1 to 4
The six preliminary round groups A, B, C, D, E and F are made up of one team each from pots 1, 2, 3 and 4. Nagelsmann's DFB team will therefore initially avoid the five nations from Pot 1.
Pot 1 | Germany (seeded A1), Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium, England |
Pot 2 | Hungary, Turkey, Denmark, Albania, Romania, Austria |
Pot 3 | Netherlands, Scotland, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic |
Pot 4 | Italy, Serbia, Switzerland, winner of play-off A, winner of play-off B, winner of play-off C |
The mode:
Germany is the only nation not to be drawn and will play the opening match in position A1 on June 14 in Munich. The nations in pot 1 are drawn first, the first goes into group B, the next into group C and so on. This is followed by the draw for the respective position in the group - only Germany is automatically top of the group.
Next, the selection teams are drawn from pot 2, the first nation is Germany's group opponent, but is then assigned a group position (A2, A3 or A4). A2 is the opening opponent. The team subsequently drawn goes into Group B. This draw mode continues until the last draw ball in pot 4. There are no requirements, as in the European Cup, that matches between certain teams in the group are excluded.
The exact scheduling of the matches will be finalized and published shortly after the draw. The play-offs will follow in March, only then will all 24 European Championship participants be known.
The wild cards
Play-off winners A will be determined in March 2024 by Poland, Wales, Finland and Estonia. Playoff winner B will be decided by Israel, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iceland and Ukraine. The candidates from play-off path C are Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan and Luxembourg. Tournaments with semi-finals and finals will be played. In the semi-finals, the teams ranked higher in the Nations League have the right to play at home.
