The Bayern disaster began with the match report sheet
FC Bayern Munich conceded a terrible defeat in Frankfurt in which virtually nothing went right. Coach Thomas Tuchel does not want to let his players' individual mistakes fall by the wayside, but is also hard on himself.
Thomas Tuchel still meant well with his players after the disaster in Frankfurt: "We are disappointed and also angry. There is a lot to come to terms with and a lot to digest. It's clear that we have few arguments for what we did. Ultimately, the responsibility remains with me," said the FC Bayern Munich coach after the 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, in which the record champions put in a desolate performance.
"When you have a week of training, can prepare for a match for a long time and then start a game like that, you don't have many arguments on your side." Due to the cancellation of the Bundesliga home match against Union Berlin last weekend and the surprising forced break in the DFB Cup, his team had not played a competitive match for eleven days.
Match report sheet causes doubt
Tuchel was in no mood for an angry general reckoning with his team; instead, the coach explicitly took responsibility for FC Bayern's biggest defeat in four years. "We brought in too much information before kick-off and lost our focus. We wanted to be poisonous. We definitely didn't bring that onto the pitch," said the coach and also gave an insight into what exactly he meant: Before the game, the opponents had "expected a back four".
But then the official match report sheet from the DFL caused uncertainty: "But on the match report sheet, it looked like a five-man back line." As a result, "we discussed a variant before kick-off in case Frankfurt played with a back five." Eintracht Frankfurt played with a back four and the score was 0:1 after twelve minutes and 0:3 from FC Bayern's point of view after just over half an hour. Tuchel was still preoccupied by the curious misinterpretation of the match report sheet after the game: "Maybe that caused us to put in too much information. Maybe that was a piece of the puzzle."
"Were punished extremely harshly"
However, the individual mistakes of his players - Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano, Min-Jae Kim, Konrad Laimer and captain Manuel Neuer all made their own mistakes - were too obvious for Tuchel to ignore: "We didn't play well and made too many mistakes. They were punished harshly today. We were punished extremely harshly for what we conceded. Now we have to ask ourselves how it can be that we start a game like that. The passion, the venom and the energy needed to win games away from home were certainly not there."
The 5-1 defeat was FC Bayern's heaviest in more than four years: The last time they lost 5-1 was in November 2019 - at Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern coach at the time, Niko Kovac, had to leave and his successor, Hansi Flick, then led the struggling FC Bayern to the championship and cup win, as well as winning the Champions League. Next Tuesday, Müller, Tuchel and Co. have to face Manchester United in the top flight.

However, Frankfurt fielded a four-man defense, and the subsequent confusion might have contributed to FC Bayern's poor performance in the soccer league, resulting in numerous individual mistakes from players like Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano, Min-Jae Kim, Konrad Laimer, and captain Manuel Neuer.
Despite the defensive unity demanded in soccer leagues like the Bundesliga, FC Bayern had to deal with a notable absence of passions, venom, and energy required to secure wins away from home against a formidable opponent like Eintracht Frankfurt. With Thomas Tuchel operating as the coach of FC Bayern Munich, they will need to find answers to these deficiencies before facing Manchester United in the Champion's League next Tuesday.
