"Terrible" Peter Wright fails at the World Darts Championship
Rarely before has a former champion and world number one been knocked out of the World Darts Championship with such a crash: Peter Wright had to return home after his opening match. The Scot had no chance against semi-pro Jim Williams.
Two-time World Darts Champion Peter Wright had to retire after his first match at the World Championships in London. "Snakebite" lost 3:0 to the Welsh semi-pro Jim Williams after a terrible performance. The 53-year-old Wright only put on a great show before the match when he came on stage with green hair and a Christmas shirt and jumped across the stage with his cheerleader pom-poms.
The Scot's performance on the glass then looked anything but good. Wright missed numerous chances to level the sets at 1:1 in the second round and looked broken afterwards. Numerous changes of darts didn't help either, but only seemed to unsettle the 2020 and 2022 World Champion even more. A few minutes later, the match was already over and the number four seed was eliminated with a bang. Wright - the reigning European Champion - is the second seeded player to be eliminated from the World Championship after England's James Wade.
"To be honest, I don't know what happened. I haven't got a clue, practice went well," said Wright, commenting on his crushing defeat. "Maybe it would have been a different game if I'd hit one of the doubles to win the second set. I just played terribly tonight."
16-year-old comes up trumps
Before Wright's performance, which was regarded as the highlight of the sixth day of competition, former European Champion Ross Smith secured a third round ticket. Smith defeated Dutchman Niels Zonneveld 3:1, but it was Junior World Champion Luke Littler who played the most convincingly. The 16-year-old Englishman celebrated a brilliant debut at the "Ally Pally". The 16-year-old defeated former amateur world champion Christian Kist 3:0. "I can't believe I managed that on my debut. This is the biggest thing in my career," said Littler in an interview.
German players were not in action on Wednesday. On Thursday (22:00/Dazn and Sport1), Gabriel Clemens will be called upon for the first time. The semi-finalist at the last World Cup will face Man Lok Leung from Hong Kong. Martin Schindler, Ricardo Pietreczko and Florian Hempel are also still involved in the second round of the World Cup.

Despite his green hair and energetic stage entrance, Peter Wright's darts performance during the World Championship was far from impressive, leading to his early exit. In stark contrast, 16-year-old Luke Littler, the Junior World Champion, showcased his skills in a convincing debut, defeating former amateur world champion Christian Kist.
