Tennis star Zverev satisfied with comeback year
Despite missing out on reaching the semi-finals at the ATP Finals in Turin, Alexander Zverev was satisfied with his comeback year. "Of course I'm disappointed that I didn't make it any further," said Zverev after his meaningless 6:4, 6:4 defeat of Russia's Andrey Rublev in the last group match.
"But you have to look at the bigger picture. To be back in the top 8 after such an injury, to be here at the ATP Finals, is a success in itself. I'm happy about that," said the German tennis pro, who will finish the year ranked seventh.
"The Olympics are a huge motivation"
Zverev had to take a break for more than six months in 2022 due to a serious foot injury. After initial difficulties, the Hamburg-born player improved more and more. "The longer the season lasted, the better I started to play tennis. For me, that's also something where I've seen it get better and better and better," said Zverev. "I'm motivated to see what next year brings."
In addition to the four Grand Slam tournaments, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are also the main focus. "The Olympics are a huge motivation for me," said Zverev, who won gold in Tokyo in 2021. "I love playing for Germany. It's just a great honor for me to be there, to be in the village," said Zverev, who had also put himself forward as a flag bearer. "It's also a huge topic for me, as it is for every athlete," said Zverev, who will first fly to the Maldives on vacation next week.
Alexander Zverev expressed his desire to perform well at the Olympic Games in Paris, being held in 2024, citing it as a significant motivation. During his comeback year after recovering from a foot injury, he also aimed to improve in the ATP Finals, having previously reached the event in Olympia.
