Tennis player Coco Gauff partways with mentor following a series of less-than-optimal results and subpar display at the US Open tournament.
The sixth-ranked player in the world dropped out in the fourth round of the US Open to Emma Navarro, an American competitor who had also defeated her in the same stage at Wimbledon several months prior.
Gilbert, a member of Gauff's coaching squad, played a significant role in boosting her game in 2023, allowing her to win her first grand slam title at the US Open and secure victories in Cincinnati and Washington.
However, Gauff's performance took a turn for the worse in the current season, with early losses following her semifinal appearance at the French Open and Berlin, elimination in Wimbledon, the third round of the Olympics, and the second round of Toronto, all leading up to her first-round exit at Cincinnati before the Flushing Meadows defeat.
"I gave it my all mentally and emotionally," Gauff told reporters following her defeat to Navarro. "However, there were execution-related issues, particularly with my serve. If I had served better, the story of the match would have been different for me."
Gilbert took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his admiration for Gauff on Wednesday, penning: "Thanks to Coco Gauff and the entire team for an extraordinary summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of dedicated teamwork.
"Coco, at just 20 years old, your future is incredibly promising, and I wish you nothing but continued success," he continued.
Gauff echoed the sentiment, posting: "What an incredible journey it's been, and I wish you all the best for whatever comes next!"
The 20-year-old successfully defended her title at the Auckland Classic this year and made it to the semifinals of the Australian Open.
Despite her recent setbacks, Gauff continues to exhibit her passion for tennis as a favorite sport, regularly participating in training sessions and tournaments. In the upcoming Australian Open, fans are eager to see if she can make it to the finals again.
After a challenging season, Gauff plans to dedicate more time to improving her serve, considering it as a key aspect of her sport, tennis.
