SV Werder earns important point at VW plant
Away curse beaten, liberation blow missed: Werder Bremen scored on away grounds for the first time in their fifth attempt of the season, but failed to take a real step out of the basement of the Bundesliga table. After the high-intensity 2:2 (1:1) draw at VfL Wolfsburg, Ole Werner's team, who are weak away from home, are now four points ahead of the 16th relegation place.
Marvin Ducksch (7th) and Rafael Borre (65th) scored for Werder, who were only partially rewarded for a strong performance - and were also unable to capitalize on a final phase in superior numbers to secure victory: Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix saw yellow for repeated fouls (88'). Vaclav Cerny (37') and Kevin Paredes (59') had already prevented Wolfsburg's fourth consecutive league defeat with their somewhat fortunate goals. Nevertheless, VfL remain in mid-table in ninth place.
A perfectly balanced record in the direct comparison between the teams had already raised hopes of a fiercely contested duel before the game began. In 50 Bundesliga matches up to Sunday, the winner had been Wolfsburg 20 times and Werder 20 times, with ten draws. At the start, it was the visitors who invested more in order to pull this statistic to their side. Ducksch's dream goal early on in the game was the first to delight the Bremen crowd, which had expanded considerably to include the rest of the stands. The top attacker curled a free-kick from a central position into the net with the help of the inside of the post for his fourth goal of the season.
The Wolves are biting
In game one following the announcement of the retirement of sporting director Frank Baumann, who will leave the club next summer after almost 25 years, Werder continued to dominate, but were caught cold before the break. Shortly after Wolves keeper Pavao Pervan had clawed Romano Schmid's dangerous effort from close range out of the corner, Cerny scored the surprising equalizer after some fine preparatory work.
With the convincing cup win over defending champions RB Leipzig behind them, the Wolves were much more aggressive afterwards. Summer newcomer Cerny even stumbled in a now tight game at a good level after preparatory work from top scorer Jonas Wind. Werder then took command again at the start of the second half - Ducksch's diving header narrowly missed the target and Olivier Deman missed with a low shot. But the goal came again on the other side. After great preparatory work from Joakim Maehle and Lovro Majer, Paredes pushed the ball over the line. However, Werder only needed a good five minutes to recover from the setback. Borre skillfully headed home Mitchell Weiser's perfect cross.
In the upcoming Soccer Bundesliga match, both VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen will look to build on their recent performances. VfL Wolfsburg, who managed a draw against Werder Bremen despite being a man down due to Maxence Lacroix's repeated fouls, will aim to maintain their mid-table position in the league. On the other hand, Werder Bremen, who broke their away curse with a draw against VfL Wolfsburg, will be hoping to build on this momentum and climb out of the relegation zone, especially as they have a better record against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
