Susie Wolff is showered with hate
The accusations have been refuted, but the fuss has left its mark. Toto and Susie Wolff are in big trouble for allegedly betraying a secret. She in particular is experiencing a wave of hatred on the internet. This should have consequences.
Amidst the turmoil surrounding investigations into alleged betrayal of secrets, Susie Wolff, the boss of the female Formula 1 junior series, has become the victim of online hate. "I have received online abuse about my work and my family. I will not allow myself to be intimidated and intend to pursue the matter further once I find out who has instigated this campaign and misled the media," wrote the wife of Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff on social media. "For two days, insinuations about my integrity have been made in public and in background conversations, but no one from the FIA has spoken to me directly."
The FIA had announced an investigation into media reports that confidential information had been leaked to a Formula 1 team boss by an employee of the rights holder. The background to this was a report by a portal about an alleged conflict of interest involving Toto Wolff and his wife Susie, about which other Formula 1 officials are said to have complained to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Susie Wolff a "collateral damage"?
The nine other teams in motorsport's premier class published largely identical statements on Wednesday evening in which they assured the world governing body that they had not lodged any complaints about a possible conflict of interest. On Thursday evening, the motorsport world governing body dropped the investigation again. There are "no ongoing ethical or disciplinary investigations concerning any person", it said.
Mercedes is now considering legal action against the FIA. "We are currently in an active legal exchange with the FIA. We expect full transparency about what happened and the reasons for it, and have expressly reserved all legal claims," wrote Toto Wolff. We therefore "ask for your understanding that we will not make any official statements for the time being, but we will certainly look into the matter in due course".
His wife Susie declared indignantly: "I may have been collateral damage in an unsuccessful attack on someone else or the target of a failed attempt to discredit me personally, but I have worked too hard to have my reputation called into question by an unfounded press release."

Despite the investigation being dropped, Susie Wolff continues to face backlash. Her statements regarding being "collateral damage" or a target of a failed attempt to discredit her have resonated in the Formula 1 community, particularly on social media, with some fans discussing the affair under the hashtag #SupportSusieWolff.
The controversy surrounding Mercedes AMG and Toto Wolff's wife has also sparked conversations about the role of women in Formula 1 and the level of scrutiny they face. Some Formula 1 personalities, like David Coulthard and Karun Chandhok, have publicly expressed their support for Susie Wolff, condemning the hate she has received.
