Alpine skiing - Super-G: Skier Weidle messes up speed start

Ski racer Kira Weidle made a real mess of the first speed event of the Alpine World Cup season. The Starnberg native only came 26th in the super-G in St. Moritz.

Italy's Sofia Goggia won after a brilliant run, almost a second ahead of second-placed Austrian Cornelia Hütter. Swiss Olympic champion Lara Gut-Behrami came third.

"It was a botched run from top to bottom," Weidle told ARD. Her performance was "very, very disappointing". The 27-year-old took to the slopes with bib number 1. Perhaps it wouldn't have hurt to see a few other racers beforehand, she said. She didn't hit one or two transitions well. But it was mainly down to herself that she wasn't able to show what she was capable of. Weidle's teammate Emma Aicher was eliminated, Katrin Hirtl-Stanggaßinger finished in 36th place.

New attempt in the downhill

On Saturday (10.30 a.m./ARD and Eurosport), a downhill race is scheduled in Switzerland. Weidle wants to attack again and, if possible, do the same as last year. Back then, she finished 24th in the first downhill in St. Moritz and third just one day later. "Today was a day to forget, tomorrow we start all over again," said the 2021 World Championship silver medallist.

The races in St. Moritz are the first speed competitions of the winter. It was not possible to race on the Matterhorn due to the weather. The men's World Cup in Beaver Creek in the USA was also canceled.

Kira Weidle expressed her disappointment to ARD after finishing 26th in the super-G Alpine World Cup event in St. Moritz, attributing her poor performance to her choice to race first and some mismanaged transitions. Despite the setback, Weidle remains optimistic about her chances in the upcoming downhill race in Switzerland, where she placed well last year. The 2021 World Championship silver medallist aims to redeem herself and improve her position in the World Cup standings. As a ladies' skier representing Germany, Kira Weidle continues to compete at the highest level of international alpine skiing events, including the World Cup and the Winter Olympics.
