Stuttgart's brilliant strike duo strikes again
One has 16 goals for the season, the other 8: VfB Stuttgart's attacking duo are in brilliant form and proved it against Werder Bremen. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß's team continues to mix it up in the top flight - and is easily preparing for the DFB Cup clash against BVB.
VfB Stuttgart have continued their remarkable season in the Bundesliga with concentrated offensive power. In a more than deserved 2:0 (1:0) win against a Werder Bremen side that was overstretched at times, coach Sebastian Hoeneß's team had only one criticism to make: That they did not score more goals than those by Deniz Undav (17) and Serhou Guirassy (74, penalty).
As announced, Hoeneß had named his two top scorers Guirassy (now 16 goals) and Undav (now 8) together in the starting eleven for the first time, with Chris Führich and Silas alongside them. It was a quartet with which Bremen struggled right from the start: VfB, who maintained their third place in the table, combined briskly through their opponents' half - it was beautiful to watch.
Werder lost the plot several times in Stuttgart's offensive whirl, the first time decisively when Undav scored the opening goal. The former Bremen youth player dusted off the ball in the style of a goal scorer after goalkeeper Michael Zetterer had not cut a good figure. Luckily for the visitors, it didn't get any worse shortly afterwards: Guirassy was offside when he scored (21st).
Bremen with too many mistakes
The best news for Werder: VfB made too little of their numerous chances - the game could have been decided for the storming Swabians by the break. However, Bremen knew that all it would take was one good move to get back into the game. They had their first opportunity through Rafael Borré, but his shot was just blocked (35').
Bremen also made too many mistakes in their build-up play against an aggressive Stuttgart side to seriously trouble the hosts. Werder also benefited from VfB's inability to extend their lead in the second half. Guirassy, for example, missed the ball in the far corner from close range after a wonderful assist from the very good Silas (55').
After 70 minutes, Hoeneß put an end to the interplay between Guirassy and Undav by replacing the goalscorer to make it 1:0. It didn't matter: Guirassy's seventh shot on goal put the lid on the game. Niklas Stark had previously fouled Guirassy. And Zetterer played a bad pass.
