Stuttgart super striker Undav wants to play for DFB
Deniz Undav is shining in the Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart, now his debut in the national team is approaching. He can choose his country - and opts for Germany. National team coach Julian Nagelsmann has already spoken to the 27-year-old on the phone.
Stuttgart striker Deniz Undav sees his future in the German national soccer team after a conversation with national coach Julian Nagelsmann. "Unity, justice and freedom - that's what I told him," the 27-year-old told Sky with a grin after VfB's victory in the last 16 of the DFB Cup against Borussia Dortmund.
"I have both options," said Undav, whose roots are in Turkey, "but I told him that I definitely want to take the chance to play for Germany - if I get it." And it does indeed look that way: Nagelsmann, who was at the Stuttgart stadium on Wednesday, has promised Undav an invitation for the start of the European Championship year in March. They will then face the Netherlands and France in two final tests before the European Championship at home.
"There were talks, I had a phone call with him, I was surprised and overjoyed, I couldn't believe it," reported Undav. He had "made the decision for the DFB for me" after discussions "with my wife, my family and my advisor". He then "signaled to Nagelsmann what my goal is" - the 2024 European Championship at home.
The goalscorer, who is on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, has attracted attention in recent weeks with good performances for the Swabians in the Bundesliga, scoring nine goals in twelve games across all competitions and setting up two more. With these figures, he is currently the most prolific German center forward in Europe's ten strongest leagues.
In 2012, he was selected as a youth player at Werder Bremen and initially played in the regional league before moving to SV Meppen in the third division in 2018. He then really took off in the second Belgian league, with Royal Union Saint-Gilloise. He achieved promotion with the club and celebrated the championship before moving on to England. He was then called to Stuttgart - where even a torn collateral ligament at the start of the season did not stop him for long. Now his next personal promotion is imminent.
