The national squad - Stuttgart goalkeeper Nübel is not part of Nagelsmann's European Championship squad.
In the German national football team's roster for the European Championship, goalkeeper Alexander Nübel will not be a part of the squad. This 27-year-old keeper for VfB Stuttgart was taken out of the final 26-person lineup.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann explained his choice to RTL before the last EM warm-up match against Greece in Mönchengladbach, asserting that it wasn't due to Nübel's performance. He had been performing well and fitting in with the team. However, Nagelsmann was uncertain about Leroy Sané's condition, saying that although Sané was almost 100% fit, there had been times when his health suddenly changed at Bayern. Therefore, the team decided to choose another field player instead of a fourth keeper.
Nübel's omission from the squad came unexpectedly. Nagelsmann had mentioned at the time of revealing his preliminary squad with 27 players on May 16th that he wanted to go to the tournament with four goalkeepers for the sake of managing training. Given Nübel's excellent performances with Bundesliga runner-up VfB Stuttgart, he was selected despite not having any previous international appearances. When Nübel learned he was chosen for the preliminary squad, he had to abandon a planned safari vacation.
The team now has 23 field players and three goalkeepers, like in previous tournaments. The top keeper spot is held by Bayern's Manuel Neuer, and Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona and Oliver Baumann from TSG Hoffenheim are his backup options.
Beier and Koch Potentially Cut?
Maximilian Beier, an offensive player from Hoffenheim, and defender Robin Koch from Eintracht Frankfurt were considered candidates for removal. However, Nagelsmann stressed that no player should be betrayed based on how he was doing in training camp.
On Thursday evening, the coach made his choice known. He preferred to tell the affected player after the match against Greece and then announce the definitive roster. UEFA requires supporters to register the 26 players by midnight. Only changes for injured players are allowed until the game against Scotland on June 14th, while goalkeepers can be replaced during the tournament if a UEFA doctor certifies an injury.
