Tennis - Struff wins first round at Wimbledon
Jan-Lennard Struff of the Davis Cup team had a German success experience at Wimbledon for the first time. The 34-year-old tennis player from Sauerland defeated Hungarian Fabian Marozsan 6:4, 6:7 (4:7), 6:2, 6:3. Struff eliminated counter-attacks during the match. After 2 hours and 5 minutes, the German number two used the first match point but made the match a little more exciting than necessary.
Struff had a poor start on Court 8 and was down 1:4. He then found his way to his aggressive play and secured the first set despite the deficit. In the second set, Struff had an advantage at 5:4, but made too many errors in the tiebreak. From the middle of the third set, he pulled away.
Struff's first second round match since 2019 is on Wednesday against Zhang Zhizhen of China or Frenchman Maxime Janvier for a place in the third round. Struff missed the Wimbledon edition of 2023 due to injury. In the two previous years, he faced top-class first round opponents, Russian Daniil Medvedev and Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, and lost early. Struff has not been in the second round at Wimbledon for five years.
Five more German first round matches are scheduled for the first day. Struff's Davis Cup teammate Dominik Koepfer had to withdraw for the grass-court classic on Sunday due to a foot injury. French Open finalist Alexander Zverev and former champion Angelique Kerber enter the action only on Tuesday.
Jan-Lennard Struff's international tennis success extended beyond the Davis Cup, as he also faced challenges at Wimbledon in Great Britain. Struff's victory against Hungary's Fabian Marozsan showcased his determination and resilience, even in tough matches. Struff's win in London brought a sense of achievement for the German tennis player, marking his first second round appearance at Wimbledon since 2019. With his victory, Struff represented Germany proudly in the international tennis arena.
